ROME, February 16 – Significant urban redevelopment projects are underway in Rome’s Monteverde district, part of Municipio XII. These initiatives aim to improve safety, aesthetics, and environmental sustainability in key areas. While Viale dei Quattro Venti is set for a new start, the long-awaited project on Via Ozanam continues to experience delays.
Viale dei Quattro Venti: A New Chapter of Redevelopment
A major redevelopment effort is scheduled to commence on Viale dei Quattro Venti by the end of February, as confirmed by the municipal administration. This project, with an estimated cost of 1.4 million euros funded through the Municipio’s investment plan, will focus on the renovation of sidewalks, the installation of new trees, and the creation of new flowerbeds.
Elio Tomassetti, President of Municipio XII, stated, “On February 23, an important intervention for the redevelopment of the sidewalks on Viale dei Quattro Venti will begin, which will go hand in hand with the pruning, felling, and replanting of elm trees.” The project will be divided into two phases: the first, starting from Via Innocenzo X, will last approximately 3-4 months, followed by the second phase on Viale dei Quattro Venti, which will take 5 months, totaling nine months of work. Tomassetti emphasized, “This is a highly desired project to bring safety, beauty, and decorum to one of the most important streets in the area.”
Via Ozanam: Persistent Delays and Innovative Solutions
The redevelopment of Via Ozanam, a project costing approximately one million euros, has been plagued by delays. Originally scheduled for completion in September 2025 as part of the broader Jubilee road redevelopment plan, the works, which began in January 2025, are still ongoing.
President Tomassetti assured that “the works will be completed in the coming weeks.” The project involves the replacement of over fifty elm trees that have already been felled. Furthermore, the Municipio has adopted an innovative technique for sidewalk reconstruction: “On one side, a new de-impermeabilized paving of a lighter color, which allows for better rainwater runoff and less heat retention in the warmer months; on the other, the installation of new flowerbeds on the sidewalks, with specific tree essences, so as to reduce the asphalted area in a highly urbanized area like Via Ozanam,” Tomassetti explained.
Concerns Over Transparency and Planning
Despite the innovative approaches, the delays and perceived lack of transparency have drawn criticism. Giovanni Picone, a Lega group councilor in Municipio XII, expressed concerns regarding the absence of a comprehensive vision for green space management and redevelopment interventions. “Today, citizens and traders of Via Ozanam are witnessing interventions, felling, and replanting without a clear timetable, without publicly accessible data, and without a well-defined medium to long-term strategy,” Picone stated. He highlighted the impact on safety, quality of life, and neighborhood identity, arguing that such issues “cannot be addressed with spot interventions or fragmented communications.”
Picone stressed the need for an organic green plan, including criteria for controls, stability assessments, potential felling, and subsequent replanting. Another significant issue is the accumulated delays, which he described as “shameful” and which have led to the loss of approximately 40 parking spaces, depriving residents and businesses of valuable parking. “As the Lega, we will continue to demand transparency, planning, and solutions that protect the needs of citizens,” Picone concluded, promising to monitor the situation closely.
Impact on Residents and Future Outlook
The ongoing works, particularly the delays on Via Ozanam, have caused inconvenience for local residents and businesses. The loss of parking spaces has been a particular point of contention. However, the completion of these projects is expected to bring significant improvements to the urban fabric of Monteverde, enhancing pedestrian safety and green spaces.
The Municipio XII administration remains committed to these urban renewal efforts, aiming to create a more livable and sustainable environment for its citizens. The focus on both practical infrastructure upgrades and ecological considerations reflects a broader vision for urban development in Rome.
The community awaits the finalization of these projects, with a keen eye on how the innovative solutions on Via Ozanam will perform and how the new works on Viale dei Quattro Venti will transform the area.
