Milan-Seregno Metro-Tram Stalled: Confcommercio Demands Compensation and Certain Timelines
Milan, February 16, 2026 – Confcommercio has once again highlighted the critical situation surrounding the Milan-Seregno Metro-Tram construction, which remains at a standstill. The organization is urging authorities to overcome the impasse and provide compensation for commercial activities severely affected by the prolonged delays.
The municipalities of Bresso, Desio, and Nova Milanese are bearing the brunt of the stalled project, with approximately 200 businesses reportedly isolated by the ongoing construction. The itinerant market in Bresso is also significantly impacted.
A Long-Standing Issue with No Resolution
The initial concerns were raised in January 2023, when the project was projected to take 38 months. By September 2024, a press conference held by Confcommercio in Desio brought attention to the complete halt of the construction sites, coupled with a demand for relief for the most affected businesses. This led to discussions with the Metropolitan City of Milan, including informational meetings for economic operators and hearings in the Region. However, despite these efforts, the construction sites, which stopped in 2024, are still inactive as of February 2026.
Confcommercio Milano, Lodi, Monza, and Brianza, along with the territorial Confcommercio Alta Brianza, are reiterating their concerns regarding the critical situation.
Economic and Traffic Repercussions
Simone Errico, director of Confcommercio Alta Brianza, explained, “The de facto abandonment and immobility of the construction sites are leading not only to a persistent economic impact for commercial activities located along the route, with losses of up to 20% of turnover directly attributable to the presence of the construction sites and access limitations, but also significant repercussions on local traffic. This includes road closures, detours, and traffic restrictions that significantly affect the daily mobility of citizens.”
Call for Transparency and Urgent Measures
Ermanno Gatti, president of Confcommercio Alta Brianza, emphasized, “It is our duty to keep attention high on this work, which to call ‘unfinished’ is an understatement. To date, we have no concrete news from the Metropolitan City of Milan regarding the acceleration of work on the Metro-Tram. Certain timelines are needed with transparent communication on the actual state of progress of the work and urgent measures to mitigate the negative impact on the territory.”
Specific Compensation Funds Needed
Marco Barbieri, general secretary of Confcommercio Milano, Lodi, Monza, and Brianza, added, “The slow progress of the Milan-Seregno Metro-Tram is no longer tolerable. We are once again asking for specific tenders with compensation for the most affected businesses, as was done in Milan for the subway construction sites.”
Confcommercio Milano, Lodi, Monza, and Brianza, together with Confcommercio Alta Brianza, suggest a potential avenue for obtaining resources: the new call for bids from the Lombardy Region for the Commercial Districts. They are urging municipalities with Commercial Districts involved in the Metro-Tram project to allocate specific resources to support the economic activities penalized by the construction work.
