Milan, 29 January – The city of Milan has officially rolled out its new bidirectional Tramlink trams, signaling the most extensive renewal of its tram fleet in decades. These advanced trams, manufactured by Stadler Valencia, are now operating in the city center, including on the symbolic line 9, after initial deployment on lines 7 and 31.
A Leap Forward in Milanese Public Transport
The introduction of the Tramlink trams represents a major technological and operational advancement for Milan’s public transport. These are the first bidirectional trams in the city’s history, featuring two driver’s cabins-one at each end-which allows for quick changes in direction when needed. This design significantly enhances service flexibility and resilience, crucial for a bustling metropolis like Milan.
Investment and Fleet Expansion
This initiative is part of a comprehensive plan that includes the delivery of 74 new trams, backed by a total investment of approximately 190 million euros. The first vehicle, tram 7701, has already commenced service, with more units progressively entering operation.
The iconic line 9, known for its extensive, circular route through diverse neighborhoods, is expected to be one of the key lines where the new Tramlink trams will fully demonstrate their capabilities. This line, a daily fixture for many Milanese, will benefit greatly from the increased efficiency and modern features of the new fleet.
Enhanced Passenger Experience and Technology
Each new Tramlink tram measures 25 meters in length and comprises three interconnected carriages, offering 66 comfortable seats. The interior design prioritizes passenger safety and convenience:
- Advanced Surveillance: Ten internal cameras are linked directly to Atm’s central Security system, providing constant monitoring.
- Real-time Information: State-of-the-art infotainment systems, including monitors displaying real-time stop information and route details.
- Connectivity: USB ports are available for passengers to charge their smartphones, catering to the needs of modern commuters.
These features underscore Milan’s commitment to a sustainable and user-friendly public transport network.
Broader Green Mobility Initiatives
The renewal efforts extend beyond the tram network. By 2026, Milan aims to integrate 600 new electric buses into its fleet, pushing the proportion of green vehicles to over 50%. Concurrently, there is an ongoing complete overhaul of the trains for metro lines M1 and M3, further cementing Milan’s dedication to environmentally conscious and efficient urban mobility.
As these new trams seamlessly integrate into the daily rhythm of Milan, navigating through traffic lights and stops, they symbolize the city’s forward-looking approach to public transportation. For residents and visitors alike, particularly those who rely on line 9, the future of Milanese mobility has truly begun to unfold.
