Medical School Admissions in Rome: Thousands Admitted, Appeals Loom

The ” filtro semester” for medical degree courses has concluded amidst controversy, which also accompanied the initial tests, with reports of irregularities and announcements of appeals, leading up to the publication of the ranking of eligible candidates on a national basis.

Thousands of Students Admitted to Roman Universities

From the list, it is possible to extract the number of eligible students admitted to Roman universities, namely Sapienza and Tor Vergata. The ranking of eligible candidates includes both those who obtained at least a passing grade in all three subjects (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) and aspiring doctors who are admitted conditionally and will be required to recover missing credits in time for enrollment in the second semester.

Overall, the Medical ranking lists 22,688 eligible candidates and is composed of nine sections. The first four sections consist of students who passed all three exams, either with direct passes or reintegrated scores (by accepting previously rejected grades from the first call). From the fifth section onwards, however, there are those admitted “conditionally,” meaning candidates who did not achieve at least 18 in one or more subjects and who, to definitively access their dream course, will have to recover the missing credits. This is essentially a true debt.

Sapienza University Admissions

At Sapienza, 1660 students are eligible, of whom approximately 540 are in the first four sections (484 in the first section alone, which represents the highest part of the ranking) and have therefore passed all three tests. The remaining eligible candidates are found from the fifth section up to the seventh and will therefore have to integrate the missing credits. Eligible students are distributed across the four campuses of the central headquarters (A, B, C, D, organized by the letters of the surname), the Sant’Andrea campus, the High Technology Medicine and Surgery course, the Pontine campus, and the Rieti campus. Over 5,000 students were enrolled in Sapienza’s filtro semester (across Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Dentistry).

Tor Vergata University Admissions

At Tor Vergata, approximately 703 students are eligible, of whom at least 104 are in the first four sections of the ranking (94 in the first section alone). The last positions, in the seventh section, are occupied by 220 students who have been assigned to the Tirana campus, specifically the private university Nostra Signora del Buon Consiglio, with which the Roman university has activated a “Joint degree,” an integrated inter-university study program.

This issue has sparked heated controversy, given that access to the degree course organized in Albania involves an annual fee of 9500 euros. The Minister of University, Anna Maria Bernini, also took an interest in the matter, calling the Rector of Tor Vergata, Nathan Levialdi Ghiron, yesterday (Monday, January 12th) to discuss and try to find a solution. Slightly more than 2,000 students enrolled in Tor Vergata’s filtro semester in September.

What Happens Next?

Following the publication of the ranking, students have until January 14th to enroll, or risk losing their spot. Those admitted conditionally must recover their debts by the end of February. However, a jungle of appeals looms on the horizon. The “Medicina senza filtri” (Medicine without filters) committee, composed of Studio Legale Leone-Fell, Radicali Italiani, Dispenso Academy, Associazione Acquirenti, and Associazione Intesa Universitaria, has long denounced irregularities in the test conduct and branded the ministerial implementation decrees published on December 22nd as “illegitimate.”

The committee also intends to propose a new reform for access to Medicine, presented at today’s press conference, Tuesday, January 13th, at the Chamber of Deputies. Furthermore, the Union of University Students has promised a collective national appeal: “More than 25,000 students have been left stranded by the government – is the accusation – we will not stand for it. This filtro semester is a failure, and for this reason, we are organizing a collective appeal.”
