Verona, April 12 – Lazio is gearing up to be a major player at the 58th edition of Vinitaly, the international wine exhibition held at Veronafiere from April 12 to 15. The region’s stand will feature an unprecedented 61 local wineries, three consortia (Roma Doc, Cesanese Docg, and Atina Doc), and two dedicated rooms for tastings and masterclasses designed to introduce local grape varieties to wine professionals worldwide.
Lazio: From Wine Producer to a ‘Region of Wines’
Giancarlo Righini, the Regional Councillor for Agriculture, expressed optimism about Lazio’s growing presence in the wine sector. “We will bring with us the full awareness of the specific weight our companies have gained in recent years,” Righini stated. “We will not speak of Lazio wines, but rather of Lazio as a ‘region of wines.’ We will thus place at the center of the narrative a territory rich in history, culture, biodiversity, and autochthonous viticultural traditions.”
This shift in narrative underscores a strategic effort to position Lazio as a distinct and significant wine-producing region on the international stage, moving beyond its traditional image.
Bridging the Gap: Promoting Lazio Wines in Rome
Despite recent advancements, Lazio’s wine industry still faces challenges, particularly in competing with more established Italian wine regions like Veneto, Tuscany, Piedmont, Alto Adige, and Sicily. This disparity is evident in the choices made by Roman restaurateurs, who often prioritize wines from these more renowned areas.
Righini highlighted a key initiative to address this. “It is estimated that 20 million bottles are uncorked in the city every year,” he noted. “To help Roman restaurateurs not to yield too much to the requests of foreign customers looking for the most well-known brands abroad, we have stipulated an agreement with the Fipe Roma association to give greater visibility to ‘Made in Lazio’ products in bars, restaurants, and hotels.” This agreement aims to increase the presence and appreciation of local wines within the capital’s vibrant culinary scene.
Rocca’s Administration Focuses on Enogastronomic Excellence
The Rocca administration is leveraging the Vinitaly event as a crucial platform to promote Lazio’s enogastronomic excellence. The exhibition provides an unparalleled opportunity to connect with international buyers, distributors, and critics, fostering new partnerships and expanding market reach for Lazio’s diverse wine offerings.
The emphasis on autochthonous grape varieties and the unique terroir of Lazio is expected to resonate with a global audience increasingly seeking authentic and distinctive wine experiences. The masterclasses and tasting sessions at Vinitaly will offer a deep dive into the specific characteristics and heritage of these local wines, aiming to educate and captivate attendees.
Economic Impact and Future Prospects
Increased visibility and market penetration for Lazio wines are anticipated to have a positive economic impact on the region. The growth of the wine sector can lead to job creation, boost agricultural tourism, and enhance the overall reputation of Lazio as a premier destination for wine enthusiasts.
The participation of a record number of wineries at Vinitaly signifies a concerted effort by the regional government and local producers to collectively elevate Lazio’s wine industry. This collaborative approach is vital for achieving sustained growth and securing a competitive edge in the global wine market.
The success at Vinitaly could pave the way for further investments in viticultural research, sustainable farming practices, and innovative marketing strategies, ensuring the long-term prosperity of Lazio’s wine sector.
