Hepatitis A Outbreak in Naples: 43 Hospitalized at Cotugno Hospital
Naples, March 18 – An unprecedented surge in Hepatitis A cases has led to the hospitalization of 43 individuals at Cotugno Hospital in Naples. This marks a significant increase from the usual caseload, with medical professionals expressing concern over the severity and number of patients requiring inpatient care.
Dr. Novella Carannante, an infectious disease specialist at Cotugno Hospital, a facility renowned for treating infectious diseases in Naples, stated, “We are in a very acute phase. We currently have 43 hospitalized patients, a very unusual number for March.”
Unusual Spike in Cases and Severity
Dr. Carannante elaborated on the unusual nature of the outbreak. “Normally, during this period, we see about ten mildly infected individuals who can be diagnosed and treated at home. Today, however, we have a long series of serious patients, and we have completely filled the ward, with many patients on stretchers in the emergency room. The overcrowding worries us, and we hope it will decrease.”
Among the hospitalized is a 46-year-old man who, in addition to Hepatitis A, is also suffering from severe liver failure. He has been transferred to Pathology at Cardarelli Hospital for evaluation regarding a potential liver transplant.
Hepatitis A cases in Campania typically peak in January, often linked to the consumption of raw seafood during the holiday season. However, Dr. Carannante noted, “In March, we usually have low numbers, but now we have raised our level of attention.” The majority of current inpatients are between 35 and 45 years old.
Understanding Hepatitis A and Prevention
Hepatitis A is a preventable disease, yet vaccination rates in Italy remain low as it is not mandatory, except for certain professional categories such as chefs and medical personnel. “Vaccination is available for both pediatric and adult age groups, but it is optional here, whereas it is mandatory in regions like South America,” Dr. Carannante emphasized.
The current situation highlights the importance of public awareness regarding preventive measures and the availability of vaccination. The hospital continues to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to exercise caution and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms.
