Giro d’Italia 2027 to Conclude in Bagnoli, Naples: A €28 Million Revitalization Plan Underway
Naples, May 16, 2026 – The Giro d’Italia will make a historic return to Naples in 2027, with the final stage set to conclude in the Bagnoli district. This marks a significant shift from the traditional seafront finish, as the “pink caravan” will now cross the finish line near the former Italsider area, symbolizing the rebirth of this western part of the city. The ambitious plan involves a €28 million investment to overhaul the district’s infrastructure, paving the way for both the prestigious cycling race and the America’s Cup regatta.
A Strategic Alliance: Giro d’Italia and America’s Cup
The decision to bring the Giro d’Italia to Bagnoli is part of a broader strategy by Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi to intertwine the city’s passion for cycling with the thrill of regattas. The spring-summer of 2027 will see the Gulf of Naples transform into an international sporting arena, first with the Giro d’Italia in May and then with the America’s Cup, whose logistical base will be located in the former industrial area. This dual event strategy aims to showcase Bagnoli as a vibrant, renewed waterfront destination.
Urban Transformation: A New Road Network and Pedestrian Zones
To accommodate these large-scale events and facilitate the district’s long-term development, a comprehensive urban renewal project is underway. Invitalia, the government agency responsible for the Bagnoli lands, has already drafted plans for a completely new road network surrounding the former factory. This network will form a large, irregular ring, connecting new public and private spaces within the area.
A key aspect of this transformation is the radical redesign of Via Coroglio. Currently a fast-flowing traffic artery, it will be largely converted into a limited traffic zone (ZTL), transforming it into a green promenade that connects the urban park with the waterfront. Only sections leading to Città della Scienza and from Piazzetta Bagnoli to Pontile Nord will remain accessible to vehicles.
Enhanced Accessibility and Sustainable Mobility
Alternative routes for residents and tourists will be created through new parallel roads, built on the foundations of the old factory. These new arteries will provide access to residential complexes, hotels, the Marine Farm, the archaeological square, and the Porta del Parco. Additionally, Via Cocchia will be extended directly to the sea, further improving connectivity.
Sustainable mobility is a central theme of the revitalization. Every new road in the Tenth Municipality will feature a dedicated two-way cycle path. These paths will be functionally linked to those within the park and any existing or future cycle paths in neighboring districts, creating a comprehensive network for cyclists.
Reclaiming Industrial Heritage: The Piers of Bagnoli
The recovery of the old industrial structures, particularly the North and South piers extending into the sea, is also a priority. These emblematic infrastructures, once symbols of industrial decline, will be revitalized to provide full accessibility and serve as prime viewing points for both the regattas and the cycling races. Mayor Manfredi emphasized that these works aim to restore full functionality to these strategic and symbolic spaces.
Significant Investment in Infrastructure
The €28 million funding will be allocated to various infrastructure projects. An initial €16 million block will be used to renovate Viale Augusto, Via Cinthia, and the area near the university. The remaining €12 million will be dedicated to upgrading Via Diocleziano and Piazza a Mare. The tight schedule ensures that all preparations will be completed by spring 2027, in time for the Giro d’Italia.
This ambitious undertaking not only promises to bring international sporting prestige to Naples but also to fundamentally transform Bagnoli into a modern, accessible, and environmentally conscious urban area, ready to welcome visitors and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
