Naples, May 3 – Free Time Jepson, a five-year-old bay horse, has won the 77th edition of the Gran Premio Lotteria, held today at the Agnano Hippodrome. The Italian trot horse, sired by Face Time Bourbon and Titty Jepson, completed the 1600-meter race in an impressive 1’10″9, showcasing a remarkable performance.

The Race Unfolds: A Dramatic Finish

The race began without major surprises, with Dhube Prav taking an early lead and maintaining it for the first 1000 meters. Despite fending off initial challenges, Dhube Prav faltered on the final bend, allowing Frank Gio to emerge alone on the straight. However, from the rear, Free Time Jepson, expertly guided by Andrea Guzzinati, launched a powerful surge, crossing the finish line beneath the grandstands. Ernesto Spritz, with Andrea Farolfi, secured third place.

Reflecting on the victory, driver Andrea Guzzinati stated, “In the heat, his class made the difference. Then, in the final, I made my move a bit early, and when I saw Gelormini shifting onto Abrivard on the final bend, I was almost certain of victory. The horse has a big heart, he really wanted to do well, and I let him fly.”

A Race for a Cause: Honoring Domenico Caliendo

The award ceremony was marked by a poignant tribute to young Domenico Caliendo. His family and the foundation bearing his name were present, as all proceeds from the sale of entrance tickets to the Gran Premio were donated to the foundation. This decision was unprecedented for the organizers of one of Italy’s and Europe’s most significant equestrian events. In over 70 years of history, the Gran Premio Lotteria had never before been associated with a memorial day.

This initiative highlights a growing trend in major sporting events to integrate social responsibility and support charitable causes, adding a layer of profound meaning to the competitive spirit of the sport. The Gran Premio Lotteria not only delivered thrilling equestrian action but also served as a platform for remembrance and community support.

Impact on the Local Community

The event drew a significant crowd to the Agnano Hippodrome, boosting local tourism and economy. The participation of a high-profile horse like Free Time Jepson, with its strong lineage, further elevated the prestige of the race. Such events are crucial for the continued development of equestrian sports in the region and for attracting both domestic and international spectators.

The success of Free Time Jepson, coupled with the charitable aspect, has generated positive attention for Naples and the Campania region, showcasing its capacity to host world-class events with a compassionate touch. The organizers hope that this blend of sport and philanthropy will inspire future events and foster a stronger sense of community engagement.

The 77th Gran Premio Lotteria will be remembered not only for the exhilarating performance of Free Time Jepson but also for its heartwarming dedication to the memory of Domenico Caliendo, making it a truly special occasion in the history of Italian harness racing.
