Rome, March 16, 2026 – The sound of military aircraft flying over Rome today caused a stir among residents, with many questioning the reason behind the aerial activity. These aircraft have been identified as the Frecce Tricolori, Italy’s aerobatic team, conducting rehearsals for a significant national event scheduled for tomorrow.
Celebrations for Italy’s 165th Unification Anniversary
The Frecce Tricolori will perform a flyover above the Altar of the Fatherland on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, as part of the celebrations for the 165th anniversary of the Unification of Italy. This event, officially designated as “National Unity, Constitution, Anthem, and Flag Day,” will see a series of ceremonies and public displays across the capital.
No Correlation with Seismic Activity
The flyover activity coincided with a minor earthquake (magnitude 1.9) reported by the INGV in Rome at 13:58, with an epicenter in the eastern periphery of the capital. This followed two smaller tremors registered on Saturday, March 14, at 22:44 and 22:47, with epicenters in Ciampino and magnitudes of 2.0 and 1.9 respectively. Despite initial public speculation and social media reports of loud bangs, officials have confirmed that there is no correlation between the seismic activity and the military aircraft’s presence.
Official Program of Events
The Presidency of the Council of Ministers has released a statement outlining the day’s schedule. At 9:45 AM, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will attend the wreath-laying ceremony by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, at the Altar of the Fatherland. During this ceremony, a reduced formation of the Frecce Tricolori will conduct a flyover, authorized by the Ministry of Defense at the request of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.
In a departure from tradition, the midday cannon shot at the Gianicolo will be replaced by a three-gun salute, fired simultaneously by three artillery pieces, producing green, white, and red smoke to symbolize the Italian flag.
Musical Performances and Homages to National Heroes
Piazza Colonna will host performances by the musical bands of the Armed Forces and Police Forces, organized by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. The program will run from approximately 10:30 AM to 5:15 PM and will feature bands from the Local Police of Rome Capital, the National Fire Brigade, the Penitentiary Police, the State Police, the Guardia di Finanza, the Carabinieri, the Air Force, the Navy, and the Army.
To further commemorate the civil solemnity of March 17, established by Law 23 November 2012, n. 222, the Prime Minister has delegated government representatives to lay wreaths at the tombs of the Fathers of the Fatherland: Giuseppe Mazzini (Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno in Genoa), Camillo Benso di Cavour (Cavour Castle in Santena, Turin), Vittorio Emanuele II (Pantheon in Rome), and Giuseppe Garibaldi (Garibaldi Compendium of Caprera, Sassari).
Additionally, public buildings will be specially adorned with flags, and the main facade of Palazzo Chigi will be illuminated with the Tricolore from 00:01 AM to 11:59 PM on March 17, with an interruption during daylight hours.
