Rome, March 1 – Four Romanian citizens were arrested in Rome overnight for aggravated theft and possession of false documents. They were apprehended by the State Police while attempting to flee with 200 kg of copper and numerous tools stolen from a private garage. The timely intervention of the officers prevented the suspects from escaping, as they had already loaded the stolen goods onto a vehicle near the Grande Raccordo Anulare.
Police Blitz: Reconstruction of the Facts
According to the State Police website, the incident occurred late at night on Viale di Tor Bella Monaca. A patrol noticed a vehicle parked with its hazard lights on. Next to the car, four individuals were hastily loading tools and large cables. Officers intervened, blocking the suspects before they could take their escape route towards the Grande Raccordo Anulare.
The Stolen Material and the Suspects
During the check, the arrested individuals – Romanian citizens aged between twenty and thirty-eight – provided an “incredible” justification, claiming to have found the material by chance on the street. However, their agitated state, obvious sweating, and heavy breathing further aroused the suspicion of the officers, who decided to conduct further investigations.
Traces and Discovery of the Theft
The officers on duty in Rome identified recent drag marks beyond the guardrail, consistent with the transport of heavy objects: footprints on the ground, broken branches, and marks left by the passage of large tool cases. A few meters away, during a check of nearby homes, a damaged gate was found. A resident reported hearing suspicious noises coming from the garage area shortly before, attributable to the movement of heavy loads.
Owner’s Confirmation and Recovery of Stolen Goods
Crucial was the verification with the homeowner, who arrived on site immediately. Together with the officers, he confirmed the damage to the gate and the garage, as well as the disappearance of numerous tools and copper cables. All the material was subsequently found inside the vehicle used by the arrested individuals and returned to its rightful owner.
Arrest and Charges
All four members of the gang were arrested on charges of aggravated theft in concert. In addition, two of them were reported for possession of false documents. The Judicial Authority validated the operation of the State Police.
