Five More Far-Right Militants Convicted for 2021 CGIL Assault in Rome
Rome, April 10 – Five additional far-right militants have been convicted for their roles in the devastating assault on the CGIL headquarters in Rome on October 9, 2021. The attack occurred during a “No Green Pass” demonstration. The sentences, handed down yesterday morning by the VII collegiate section of the Rome court, collectively amount to nearly 30 years of imprisonment.
All defendants have also been ordered to pay damages, jointly and severally, to the civil parties, including the CGIL and the National Association of Partisans. Furthermore, they have all been permanently barred from holding public office.
Nearly 30 Years of Combined Sentences
The individuals convicted and their respective sentences are as follows:
- Alberto Prosperi: 5 years and 4 months in prison
- Giuseppe Conti Bonanno: 5 years and 7 months in prison
- Nicola Franzoni: 6 years in prison
- Alessandro Brugnoli: 5 years and 7 months in prison
- Giovanni Pigna: 5 years and 7 months in prison
The court emphasized the severity of the actions, which resulted in significant damage to the trade union’s premises and were widely condemned as an attack on democratic institutions.
The Devastation of the CGIL Headquarters
The assault took place during a protest against the Green Pass, after participants had marched close to Montecitorio, where parliamentary representatives were gathered for the Pre-Cop 26. Far-right militants then proceeded to storm and vandalize the CGIL headquarters.
Maurizio Landini, the General Secretary of the CGIL, described the incident as “an act of fascist thuggery – an attack on democracy and the entire world of labor that we intend to repel. No one should think of bringing our country back to the twenty years of fascism.”
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
This latest verdict follows previous convictions related to the same incident. Towards the end of 2023, sentences were issued against:
- Giuliano Castellino: 8 years and 7 months
- Roberto Fiore: 8 years and 6 months
- Luigi Aronica: 8 years and 5 months
- Salvatore Lubrano: 8 years and 2 months
- Luca Castellini: 8 years and 2 months
- Lorenzo Franceschi: 8 years and 2 months
- Pamela Testa: 8 years and 2 months
Earlier, Fabio Corradetti and Massimiliano Ursino, a Palermo leader of Forza Nuova, had also been convicted. However, their convictions were subsequently annulled by the Court of Cassation in 2024.
The ongoing trials underscore the determination of the Italian justice system to hold accountable those responsible for the violence and destruction that occurred during the “No Green Pass” demonstrations.
The prosecution had initially sought sentences of 10 years and 6 months for Fiore, Castellino, and Aronica, indicating the gravity with which these acts are viewed by the authorities.
The Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office continues its investigations into other individuals involved in the assault, with further legal proceedings expected.
