Naples, May 14 – Five individuals, including the alleged clan boss Massimiliano Esposito, known as “‘o scugnato,” have been arrested in Bagnoli on charges of extortion, attempted extortion, and robbery, all aggravated by mafia methods. The arrests stem from an investigation into a 285,000 euro extortion attempt targeting a luxury car rental entrepreneur, following an incident involving a rented Lamborghini.

The Extortion Scheme Unveiled

The investigation, coordinated by the Naples Anti-Mafia District Directorate (DDA) and conducted by the Mobile Squad led by Mario Grassia, revealed a sophisticated scheme of pressure and intimidation. The alleged demand for 285,000 euros arose after a Lamborghini, rented to a client, was damaged in an accident. Investigators found no real basis for this claim, as no documents or ownership records linked the luxury car to the clan members who were demanding compensation.

Alongside Massimiliano Esposito, Lucio Musella (37), Alessio Caruso (37), Marco Zito (50), and Francesco Grassi (34) were also taken into custody. These individuals are believed to be connected to the Esposito clan, which controlled the Bagnoli territory at the time of the events.

From Fraud Attempt to Violent Intimidation

The ordeal for the entrepreneur, operating in the luxury car rental sector in the Caserta area, reportedly began with an attempt by a prominent member of the criminal group to obtain a high-value vehicle using false documents. When the car rental owner discovered the fraud, a scuffle ensued. According to the prosecution, the clan then demanded a “reparation” of ten thousand euros in cash for the perceived affront, which the entrepreneur reportedly paid.

However, the pressure did not stop there. Soon after, a much larger demand of 285,000 euros was made to cover damages to the Lamborghini involved in the accident. The suspects claimed the supercar belonged to the boss of the criminal group, a claim that investigators found to be entirely unsubstantiated by any documentation.

Armed Robbery and Key Evidence

The absence of proof regarding the car’s ownership allowed investigators to classify the incident as a clear case of extortion. When the entrepreneur refused to pay the exorbitant sum, a punitive expedition followed. According to the investigation, several members of the group allegedly stormed the car rental office in Mondragone, arriving in cars and scooters, with their faces covered by balaclavas. They then seized a vehicle registered to the owner’s wife, taking it by force.

Crucial to identifying the alleged perpetrators were images from surveillance cameras installed in the area and along the routes taken by those involved in the intimidation and robbery. These images played a decisive role in the arrests.

Legal Proceedings and Future Outlook

The preliminary investigations judge (GIP) ordered pre-trial detention for all five arrested individuals. The charges against them include extortion, attempted extortion, and robbery, all aggravated by mafia methods. As per Italian law, the suspects are presumed innocent until a final verdict is reached.

This operation underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies in Naples to combat organized crime and protect local businesses from illegal activities. The DDA and Mobile Squad continue their work to dismantle criminal networks and ensure justice in the region.
