Rome, March 2 – A tragic car crash on Via Collatina in Rome yesterday evening resulted in the deaths of an entire family – a 70-year-old father, a 64-year-old mother, and their 42-year-old son. Their vehicle, a Fiat Punto, was hit head-on by a Toyota Yaris carrying six South American individuals who were attempting to evade police during a high-speed chase.
Police Chase Ends in Catastrophe
The incident unfolded around 10:00 PM, just hours after Pope Leo IV had visited the Quarticciolo district, a challenging area known for drug dealing. Police officers from a patrol car initiated a chase after the Toyota Yaris, which was occupied by six individuals suspected of car and home thefts. The suspects, who were found to be in possession of tools for disabling alarms, screwdrivers, and other implements, ignored police orders to stop and fled at high speed.
During the pursuit, the driver of the Yaris lost control, veering into the oncoming lane on Via Collatina, where it collided with the Fiat Punto. The parents in the Punto died instantly, while their son, who was in the back seat, succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to the hospital.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
Following the devastating collision, two of the South American suspects were injured and transported to the emergency room, where they are currently under guard. A third accomplice was immediately arrested by police at the scene. All three face charges of vehicular homicide, resisting a public official, and possession of burglary tools. Authorities suspect they were actively seeking a target for theft when they encountered the police.
Three other individuals from the Yaris managed to flee on foot into the surrounding countryside before the patrol car arrived at the crash site. Police are actively searching for these fugitives, some of whom may also be injured. Investigators from the Mobile Squad are assisting in the investigation, and forensic experts have conducted a thorough examination of the crash scene on Via Collatina.
Previous Incidents and Public Concern
This tragic event echoes a similar incident in March 2021, when 14-year-old Sheena Lossetto died after a police patrol car collided with her parents’ car during a chase involving a gang of robbers. The driver of that patrol car, Pierluigi Tarsia, was subsequently indicted. The incident has reignited public concern over the safety of police pursuits in urban areas.
According to the Questura, a Carabinieri patrol car also joined the chase, which began in Quarticciolo, but “lost contact with the fleeing vehicle.” The police patrol car “remained in pursuit, albeit at a distance, to avoid creating risks.” However, the high speed of the fleeing vehicle ultimately led to the catastrophic head-on collision.

The area around Via Collatina was shrouded in fog shortly after the crash, potentially aiding the escape of some of the suspects. Police are now also searching for the gang’s hideout.
