Orte, February 14, 2026 – A critical section of the A1 Milano-Napoli motorway, specifically the stretch between Magliano Sabina and Orte in the direction of Florence, experienced a temporary closure today, February 14, starting around 11:50 AM. The closure was necessitated by adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and significant mud accumulation on the carriageway, resulting from a collapsed embankment.
Motorway Section Reopened with Caution
The affected section of the motorway was reopened to traffic around 1:15 PM. However, Autostrade per l’Italia issued a warning that despite improved conditions, the weather remains uncertain, and further closures cannot be ruled out in the coming hours. Following the reopening, traffic was restricted to two lanes, leading to queues of two to four kilometers between Ponzano Romano and Magliano Sabina.
Emergency Response and Traffic Management
Personnel from the fifth trunk section of Fiano Romano of Autostrade per l’Italia were deployed to the site to assist motorists. The weather forecast predicted an improvement in conditions after 2:00 PM. The initial closure was triggered by severe flooding and mud on the road, caused by intense rainfall that began early this morning in the area.
Mandatory Alternative Routes Implemented
For drivers traveling towards Florence, mandatory alternative routes were put in place:
- Short-distance travelers: Exit at Magliano Sabina and follow signs for Rome-Civita Castellana. Upon reaching Borghetto, proceed towards Gallese-Orte Scalo, then re-enter the A1 at the Orte station.
- Long-distance travelers from Naples: Follow signs for Rome, then take the D18 Diramazione di Roma Nord to reach the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA) of Rome. Exit onto State Road 2 Via Cassia and continue towards Orte-Viterbo before re-entering the A1 at the Orte station.
Ponzano Romano Station Also Affected
In addition to the main motorway section, the Ponzano Romano station on the A1 was also closed around 12:30 PM. This closure affected both exits and the entrance in the direction of Florence, due to flooding on the external road network. Motorists were advised to use the Fiano Romano station on the D18 Diramazione di Roma Nord as an alternative. The Ponzano Romano station was subsequently reopened around 2:20 PM.
