Major Drug Bust: 387 Kilograms of Hashish Seized in Capua, Hidden Among Pumpkins
Capua, Italy – February 22, 2026 – Carabinieri have seized a substantial quantity of hashish, totaling 387 kilograms, discovered hidden within a shipment of pumpkins in an articulated lorry near Capua. The vehicle, bearing Spanish registration plates, was intercepted in the early hours of yesterday morning as it crossed the motorway toll booth.
The operation, which dealt a significant blow to drug trafficking in the Campania region, involved military personnel from the Investigative Unit of Castello di Cisterna and the Casoria Company. Upon stopping the lorry, the 46-year-old Romanian driver reportedly stated he was transporting fruit and vegetables, including oranges, potatoes, and pumpkins. However, a closer inspection revealed a different story.
The Discovery: Hashish Concealed in Produce
As the container doors were opened, the air emanating from within immediately raised suspicions. A thorough search confirmed the carabinieri’s instincts: 387 kilograms of hashish were found meticulously concealed among the pumpkins. This ingenious, yet not entirely new, method of using produce as a cover for illicit cargo has been encountered by authorities before.
Investigations are currently underway to ascertain the precise origin and intended destination of the substantial drug shipment. The driver’s position is being carefully examined by the investigators. Initial findings suggest that the narcotics were destined for the Caserta province, indicating a significant supply chain disruption for the local drug market.
A Recurring Tactic: Drugs in Produce Shipments
This incident echoes previous cases where criminals have attempted to smuggle drugs using similar methods. Last July, twelve individuals were arrested on charges of association aimed at drug trafficking. That investigation centered on two organizations operating between Naples and Marano di Napoli, specializing in the import-export of hashish and marijuana from Spain. Authorities estimated that operation alone was worth over eight million euros.
The mechanism employed in those cases was described as both ingenious and audacious: drugs were transported hidden in loads of horticultural products, particularly pumpkins. The packages containing the narcotics were concealed beneath the official cargo and stored overnight in refrigerated cells, making detection even more challenging.
Furthermore, in 2023, a warehouse in Volla saw the seizure of 619 kilograms of hashish, some of which bore the distinctive Bart Simpson logo. In that instance, too, the drugs were found alongside pumpkins. Two brothers, with no prior criminal records and no affiliation with any known clans, were managing the illicit cargo.
The latest seizure underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat drug trafficking networks that utilize sophisticated concealment techniques to transport illegal substances into the region. Authorities remain vigilant in their pursuit of those involved in these criminal enterprises.
