School Trip Nightmare: 25 Czech Students Hospitalized in Rome

Rome, May 22, 2026 – A school trip to Rome took an alarming turn for 25 students and one teacher from the Czech Republic, who were hospitalized with symptoms of high fever, nausea, and vomiting. The group, aged between 15 and 16, fell ill almost simultaneously at their hotel in Monterotondo, a town in the metropolitan area of Rome.

Emergency Response and Hospitalization

The incident unfolded during the night between Wednesday and Thursday. According to reports from Corriere di Rieti, confirmed by health sources to RomaToday, the adolescents began to feel unwell shortly after returning to their accommodation. They had reportedly eaten out earlier in the evening.

Upon receiving the distress call, numerous ambulances from Ares 118 were dispatched to the hotel in the northern province of Rome. Emergency personnel transported 24 students and one accompanying teacher to several hospitals across the capital, including Sandro Pertini, Sant’Andrea, Bambino Gesù, and Policlinico Gemelli. All affected individuals are currently under observation.

Investigation into the Cause

The group comprised a total of 56 individuals, including students and accompanying teachers, who were visiting Rome from the Czech Republic. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the sudden illness. Among the hypotheses being considered is food poisoning. Investigators are working to determine whether the contaminated meal was consumed at the hotel or during an excursion in Rome.

Another possibility being explored is that the students may have consumed non-potable or contaminated water. At this stage, no definitive conclusions have been reached, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain the exact source of the illness.

The incident has prompted concern, highlighting the importance of health and safety protocols for groups traveling internationally. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses and the condition of the hospitalized students is monitored.
