Seventeen Arrested in Naples for Camorra Activities, Clan Operated from Prison

Naples, May 14 – Carabinieri from the Investigative Unit of the Castello di Cisterna Group have executed 17 arrest warrants as part of an ongoing investigation into the Camorra’s ‘167 of Arzano’ clan. The arrests follow a detention order issued by the Naples Public Prosecutor’s Office, confirming and renewing a previous decree from the District Anti-Mafia Directorate.

The individuals are charged with mafia-type association, continuous and aggravated extortion, voluntary homicide, and illegal possession and carrying of firearms. The investigation highlights how the clan continued to operate and issue orders to its members even from within prison, demonstrating a persistent influence over criminal activities in the Arzano area and surrounding municipalities.

Ongoing Investigations and Charges

The latest arrests build upon an earlier operation on April 21, which targeted 11 individuals suspected of belonging to the Camorra organization. That initial investigation also shed light on the circumstances surrounding the accidental murder of Rosario Coppola on February 4.

The investigating judge not only upheld the evidentiary framework against seven of the previously detained suspects but also validated serious indications of guilt against an additional ten individuals. Among these are key figures of the ‘167 of Arzano’ clan who, despite their incarceration, reportedly continued to direct operations for their associates still at large.

Investigations suggest that the clan maintained its financial stability through the proceeds of extortion. This allowed them to continue supporting incarcerated members by paying the so-called “monthly allowance,” a common practice in mafia organizations to ensure loyalty and silence.

The Role of Extortion in Sustaining the Clan

The sustained control over extortion rackets in the territory provided the necessary economic resources for the clan to maintain its structure and support its members, both inside and outside prison. This financial mechanism is crucial for the longevity and operational capacity of such criminal organizations.

Broader Context of Organized Crime in Campania

The arrests underscore the persistent challenge of organized crime in the Campania region, particularly in areas like Arzano, where Camorra clans continue to exert significant influence despite law enforcement efforts. The ability of jailed leaders to maintain control over their networks remains a critical concern for authorities.

The Carabinieri’s operation is a significant step in dismantling the ‘167 of Arzano’ clan’s leadership and disrupting its criminal activities. Further investigations are expected to uncover more details about the clan’s operations and its connections within the broader Camorra landscape.

The authorities have reiterated their commitment to combating organized crime and ensuring the safety and legality of the affected communities. The case remains under active investigation by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate.
