Naples and Campania on High Alert for Weekend Heatwave
Naples, June 27 – The city of Naples and the wider Campania region are bracing for a significant heatwave this weekend, with a Level 2 alert issued by the Ministry of Health for Saturday and Sunday. Perceived temperatures are forecast to reach a scorching 37 degrees Celsius, prompting local authorities to activate special measures to protect the most vulnerable residents.
The Ministry of Health’s bulletin, valid from Friday, June 26, to Sunday, June 28, initially placed Naples under a Level 1 alert for Friday. However, for Saturday and Sunday, the alert level escalates to 2, indicating high temperatures and meteorological conditions that could adversely affect health, particularly for susceptible individuals.
Regional Civil Protection Issues Warning for Intense Heat and Humidity
The Multi-Risk Functional Center of the Campania Region’s Civil Protection has issued a critical weather alert valid from 8:00 AM on Saturday, June 27, until 8:00 PM on Monday, June 29. The phenomenon is expected to particularly impact the provinces of Benevento and Caserta.
Temperatures are projected to be 5-6°C higher than seasonal averages, accompanied by elevated humidity levels. Along the coastal areas, humidity could exceed 60-70% on Saturday night and Sunday, potentially reaching over 70-80% on Sunday night and Monday morning, exacerbated by low ventilation.
Precautionary Measures and Emergency Services Activated
In response to the impending heatwave, the Civil Protection recommends several precautionary measures: avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, limiting car travel, and staying hydrated by consistently drinking water. Special attention is advised for individuals at higher risk, including those with heart conditions, the elderly, and children. Residents are also encouraged to ensure proper ventilation in their homes and to look after their pets.
The Municipality of Naples has launched an emergency intervention package, known as the “Heat Plan.” This initiative focuses on supporting the elderly and combating loneliness, particularly for citizens vulnerable to high temperatures due to isolation or health conditions. The Social Operations Center (reachable at 081/5627027) offers periodic telephone monitoring adjusted to Civil Protection weather alert levels and the option to activate a Tele-assistance service for the summer period. Dedicated operators will provide companionship, assistance, and help with daily tasks. The service operates Monday to Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 AM, and 24 hours on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
Support for Homeless Individuals and Street Units
The plan also includes enhanced daytime and street services to offer shelter and immediate assistance to homeless individuals. The Homeless Operations Center is active for reports daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM (081.18916811 or [email protected]).
Five mobile street units will operate for 12 hours a day (from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM), distributing essential items such as water, hats, hygiene kits, and cool clothing. These units will also provide listening support, psychological assistance, and guidance to socio-health services. Day centers (PAG Via Tanucci, Punto d’Incontro, Restart Hub) have adjusted their hours to ensure reception and protection during the hottest parts of the day. The First Welcome Center (CPA) has also anticipated guest entry to 2:30 PM.
Previous Incidents and Ongoing Concerns
Recent events underscore the seriousness of heat-related risks in Naples. There have been reports of increased emergency room visits at Cardarelli Hospital, with up to 256 admissions in a single day, attributed to the heat. Tragically, a homeless person died due to the heat in Naples, prompting the mayor to request a review of all public drinking fountains by ABC (Azienda Speciale per l’Acqua di Napoli). Additionally, the Arpac (Regional Agency for Environmental Protection in Campania) has prohibited swimming at San Giovanni a Teduccio beach due to pollution, further limiting options for cooling off.
As the city prepares for this challenging weekend, authorities urge all residents to take the heat warnings seriously and follow the recommended precautions to ensure their safety and well-being.
