Teenager Arrested for Drug Dealing in Church Courtyard in Tor Pignattara, Rome
Rome, June 19 – A 18-year-old Peruvian national was arrested yesterday in the Tor Pignattara district of Rome for allegedly using the courtyard of a local church as a base for drug dealing. The incident unfolded in the area between Via Luchino dal Verme and Via Roberto Malatesta, a location frequented by families and young people.
Suspicious Activity Leads to Arrest
According to reports, the young man, who is unemployed and has a police record, was observed acting suspiciously within the church grounds. His unusual movements and the constant coming and going did not go unnoticed by the authorities. Upon the arrival of the Carabinieri, the suspect attempted to flee on foot through the nearby streets.
During the pursuit, the teenager discarded a satchel, which was later recovered by the Carabinieri. The bag contained pre-packaged doses of hashish and materials used for packaging the drugs, suggesting that the church courtyard was indeed being used as a logistical hub for his illicit activities.
Dramatic Chase and Injury to Officer
The chase concluded in front of a building entrance where the suspect attempted to barricade himself by forcefully slamming the door shut. A Carabinieri officer intervened, preventing the door from closing completely. Despite being struck in the left arm during the struggle, the officer managed to subdue and arrest the 18-year-old.
The injured officer was subsequently taken to Vannini Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a wrist trauma, expected to heal within seven days.
Community Impact and Ongoing Investigation
The choice of a church courtyard as a base for drug dealing highlights a concerning trend of illicit activities encroaching upon community spaces. The incident has drawn attention to the need for increased vigilance and security in public areas, particularly those frequented by vulnerable populations.
The arrested teenager faces charges related to drug dealing and resisting arrest. The Carabinieri are continuing their investigation to determine if there were any accomplices or a larger network involved in the drug trade in the Tor Pignattara area.
This arrest is part of broader efforts by Roman authorities to combat drug trafficking and maintain public safety across the city. Recent operations have targeted various forms of drug dealing, from street-level sales to more organized distribution networks.
The community of Tor Pignattara has expressed relief at the swift action taken by law enforcement, emphasizing the importance of keeping public and sacred spaces safe for all residents. The incident serves as a reminder of the persistent challenges faced by urban areas in addressing drug-related crime.
