Pedestrian Fatally Struck on Via Caracciolo in Naples, Scooter Driver Arrested
Naples, June 14 – A tragic accident occurred two nights ago on Naples’ Lungomare, Via Caracciolo, resulting in the death of a 60-year-old pedestrian. The man, originally from Grumo Nevano, was hit by a scooter while crossing the roadway near civic number 12. The 29-year-old driver of the scooter has been arrested on charges of vehicular homicide.
According to investigators’ reconstruction, the incident unfolded when the scooter driver, who was accompanied by a 27-year-old female passenger, allegedly accelerated abruptly upon seeing a Carabinieri patrol. The driver reportedly attempted to evade a potential inspection by entering Via Caracciolo against the direction of traffic. The scooter was found to be uninsured, and the driver had never obtained a license.
Immediate Response and Tragic Outcome
A video released by Deputy Francesco Emilio Borrelli shows the immediate aftermath of the violent impact, with people rushing to provide initial aid to the victim. Emergency medical personnel (118) arrived promptly at the scene. The pedestrian, who sustained severe injuries, was immediately transported to Fatebenefratelli Hospital. Despite the efforts of the medical team, he succumbed to his injuries at 00:15.
The scooter driver and passenger also fell to the ground due to the impact and sustained injuries. They were transported to Ospedale del Mare, where they are currently hospitalized.
Investigation Underway, Driver Faces Charges
Personnel from the Road Accident Investigation Unit of the Naples Local Police arrived at the scene to conduct technical and planimetric surveys. The driver was subjected to urgent tests to determine any possible psycho-physical alteration. After being informed, the Public Prosecutor on duty authorized the arrest of the 29-year-old in flagrante delicto. He remains under guard at the hospital. The scooter involved in the accident has been seized.
