A night of entertainment ended in tragedy in Guidonia Montecelio, on the outskirts of Rome. In the early hours of Saturday, June 13, a hit-and-run driver struck two young men walking along Via Pantano. A 23-year-old student died instantly, while his peer was injured. The driver of the vehicle did not stop to render aid and fled the scene.

23-Year-Old Killed in Hit-and-Run Near Rome

According to Roma Today, the tragic road accident occurred around 3:00 AM on provincial road Sp27/b, in a section between Via Maremmana Inferiore and Viale Roma.

Initial reconstruction of the events indicates that the victim and a group of friends had just left a local nightclub and were walking towards where they had parked their vehicles.

Suddenly, a car traveling at high speed swerved, hitting the group of pedestrians walking along the roadside. While some members of the group miraculously managed to move out of the way to avoid impact, the 23-year-old and another young man were hit directly.

Immediately after the violent collision, the driver continued driving, disappearing into the darkness without stopping the vehicle.

Condition of the 23-Year-Old’s Friend

The Ares 118 operations center immediately dispatched a medical car and three ambulances to the scene. The 23-year-old’s condition appeared desperate to the paramedics, who promptly initiated resuscitation maneuvers on site. Unfortunately, the injuries sustained proved fatal, and doctors could only confirm his death.

The other young man involved suffered non-serious injuries and was treated on the spot, remaining conscious and out of danger throughout.

Importance of Witnesses and Investigation

The road remained entirely closed to traffic for several hours to allow for technical and scientific investigations. The investigation to identify the responsible party was entrusted to the Carabinieri of the Guidonia station and the Tivoli company, who launched a widespread manhunt across the surrounding area and Rome.

Military personnel interviewed the young people who escaped the accident and obtained footage from local security cameras to identify the model and license plate of the hit-and-run vehicle.

Hit-and-Run Driver Surrenders: Positive Alcohol Test

In the evening, a breakthrough in the case occurred: a 26-year-old worker voluntarily presented himself at the Guidonia Montecelio station, taking responsibility for the hit-and-run that claimed the life of 23-year-old Matteo D’Ambrosio.

Subjected to routine checks, the young driver tested positive for alcohol and was charged on the loose for aggravated road homicide and failure to render aid.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of drunk driving and the importance of immediate assistance in traffic accidents. Authorities continue to stress the need for responsible behavior on the roads to prevent such tragedies.

The community of Guidonia Montecelio is in shock following the loss of a young life, and calls for increased safety measures on local roads are expected.
