Milan Duomo Square Becomes a Canvas for Gaza’s Child Victims
Milan, Lombardy, Italy – In a poignant display of remembrance and protest, a massive 27-meter long cloth bearing the names of 18,457 children killed in the Gaza conflict was unfurled in Milan’s Duomo Square on Friday, June 5, 2026. The initiative, organized by the collective ‘Carnia for Peace,’ aimed to bring public attention to the human cost of the ongoing conflict.
The white cloth, a somber tapestry of names, arrived in Milan after being exhibited in other Italian cities, serving as a powerful visual representation of the thousands of young lives lost. The event began at 6:30 PM in the heart of the city, at a location that has, for months, been a weekly gathering point for supporters of the Palestinian cause.
A Collective Act of Memory and Care
Organizers of ‘Carnia for Peace’ described the act as a “shared gesture, a symbol of care and collective memory.” The display provided a public platform for commemoration, transforming the bustling Duomo Square into a space for reflection on the conflict’s devastating impact on children.
Following its display in Duomo Square, the cloth, accompanied by participants, was carried to Piazza Cairoli, in front of the Castello Sforzesco. This procession aimed to honor each individual victim and ensure that “not a single name is forgotten.”
Political Support and Ongoing Advocacy
Among those who publicly supported the initiative was municipal councilor Francesca Cucchiara (Greens), a vocal advocate for the Palestinian cause and an active participant in discussions regarding the twinning of Milan and Tel Aviv. “I thank the ‘Carnia for Peace’ collective for organizing this initiative,” Cucchiara stated on social media. “As well as all the people who dedicate an hour of their time every day to gather in Duomo with signs and flags to denounce the violence committed by Israel. In an increasingly dark, chaotic, and indifferent world, all this leaves us with at least some hope.”
A Journey of Remembrance Across Italy
The Milan event is part of a broader tour for the memorial cloth. It had previously been displayed in Naples at the end of May, and its journey will continue through Lombardy in the coming weeks, with planned stops in Como, Tirano, and Lecco. This ongoing tour seeks to keep the memory of the thousands of children affected by the conflict alive in public squares across Italy.
The initiative highlights the persistent efforts of various groups to raise awareness and advocate for peace amid international conflicts, emphasizing the profound human toll, particularly on the most vulnerable populations.
