BARI, May 28 – A 15-year-old boy from Naples, suffering from severe scoliosis combined with a complex neurological condition, has undergone a delicate and successful spinal surgery at the Policlinico di Bari. This intervention was considered impossible by other medical facilities.

Complex Case Accepted by Policlinico di Bari

The patient’s parents chose the Policlinico di Bari after several other centers had deemed the complex surgery unfeasible due to the boy’s existing disabilities and significant prior pathologies. At the Policlinico di Bari, the young patient was taken into care, and his mother was offered the option to stay hospitalized with him.

According to a statement from the university hospital, the operation was performed by Andrea Piazzolla, director of the Vertebral Surgery and Scoliosis Center unit, along with his dedicated team and the support of anesthesiologists.

Multidisciplinary Approach Key to Success

Dr. Piazzolla emphasized that the complexity of the case lay not only in the surgical procedure itself but primarily in the overall management of the patient. “A week after the operation, we can say that the anesthetic and postoperative management was excellent. The boy is now in the recovery phase and will be discharged in the coming days,” stated Piazzolla.

The 15-year-old received general anesthesia, preceded by the administration of intrathecal morphine for intra- and postoperative pain control and prevention.

Policlinico di Bari: A Hub for Complex Cases

Antonio Sanguedolce, the General Director of Policlinico di Bari, concluded, “The Policlinico di Bari is now recognized as a facility capable of tackling even the most complex cases, thanks to the work of highly integrated teams, not only in the field of vertebral surgery. This intervention demonstrates the value of an organizational model based on multidisciplinarity and integration between different professionalisms.”

This successful surgery highlights the hospital’s commitment to patient care and its advanced capabilities in managing challenging medical conditions.
