ROME, May 21, 2026 – The Teatro di Roma has announced its ambitious 2026/2027 season, presenting 90 productions across four distinct venues. The season is particularly notable for the reopening of the historic Teatro Valle, which will now serve as the House of Contemporary Dramaturgy.

A “Historical” Event for Rome’s Cultural Scene

The program was presented this morning at the Teatro Argentina, an event described as “historical” by Rome’s Mayor, Roberto Gualtieri. He confirmed the long-awaited completion of works at Teatro Valle, with its grand reopening scheduled for October 16 with ‘La sera della prima – Sei personaggi in cerca d’autore al Teatro Valle’.

Francesco Siciliano, president of the Teatro di Roma, hailed the institution as “probably the most extraordinary prose engine the country has.” The season will be under the artistic direction of Luca De Fusco.

Diverse Programming Across Four Theatres

Teatro Argentina: Masters of Experience

The Teatro Argentina will host seasoned masters, including a diptych by De Fusco himself: ‘Otello’, set in a colonial South (November 4-29), and John Ford’s ‘Peccato che fosse una sgualdrina’ (December 2-13). Peter Stein will direct Chekhov’s ‘Platonov’ from March 31 to April 11.

Teatro Valle: House of Contemporary Dramaturgy

The newly re-opened Teatro Valle will focus on contemporary dramaturgy. Highlights include Caryl Churchill’s ‘Escaped alone’, directed by Lisa Ferlazzo Natoli and Alessandro Ferroni (October 23-November 1); ‘Memoria di ragazza’, based on Annie Ernaux’s book and directed by Silvia Costa (November 10-22); and Daria Deflorian’s exploration of human fragility in Han Kang’s ‘Che dolore terribile è l’amore’ (November 26-December 6). Pirandello returns on April 20 with Emma Dante’s ‘Studio sui Sei personaggi in cerca d’autore’.

Teatro India: Vibrant Research and Modern Adaptations

Teatro India’s schedule features Francesca Astrei’s ‘Gli elefanti nella stanza’ (October 16-November 1), Jacopo Gassmann’s vibrant and mature research with Dan O’Brien’s ‘The Body of an American’ (February 20-28), and Davide Sacco’s direction of Stefan Zweig’s ‘Lettera di una sconosciuta’ (April 13-18).

Teatro Torlonia: Innovative and Challenging Performances

Among the performances at Teatro Torlonia are Danilo Capezzani’s ‘Racconti Romani’ (December 3-6 for the first part, December 10-13 for the second), Riccardo Caporossi’s conceptual rigor in ‘Vita a rate’ (April 16-30), and Enrico Torzillo’s interactive challenge with ‘Spettacolo politicamente scorretto’ (May 21-30).

Capitale Danza 2027 and Junior Direction

A new addition to the season is the work of Lea Giamattei, a junior director under 35, who has curated the Capitale Danza festival, scheduled for May 2027. This festival will feature talents such as Mehdi Kerkouche, the Batsheva Dance Company, and Palestinian artists Marah Haj Hussein and Nur Garabli.

The season’s slogan, “Il teatro è VITA,” is an acrostic representing the four key theatres: Valle, India, Torlonia, and Argentina, symbolizing the vibrant life that theatre brings to the city.
