Cigarette Smuggling at Capodichino Airport: Two Arrested

Naples, May 20 – Two passengers were apprehended at Naples Airport on May 1st for attempting to smuggle 540 cartons of cigarettes into Italy. The operation, conducted by the Guardia di Finanza of Capodichino and officials from the local branch of the Customs and Monopolies Agency, resulted in the seizure of 108 kg of illicit tobacco.

The two Armenian citizens, arriving from Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, were intercepted as part of ongoing efforts to prevent and combat illegal trafficking. Authorities intensified checks on the baggage of the two individuals, leading to the discovery of the extensive contraband.

Detailed Inspection Reveals Counterfeit Seals

During a thorough inspection, the 540 cartons of cigarettes were found concealed within cellophane containers in the passengers’ hold luggage. A critical detail noted by the authorities was the presence of counterfeit Armenian customs seals on the tobacco products, indicating a clear intent to bypass legal import procedures.

Following the discovery, all the processed tobacco was immediately seized. The two individuals responsible for the smuggling attempt have been reported to the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of Naples on charges of smuggling.

Ongoing Investigation and Legal Process

The criminal proceedings are currently in the preliminary investigation phase. It is important to note that, in accordance with the principle of non-guilt, the responsibility of the individuals under investigation will only be definitively established upon a final and irrevocable conviction.

The measure was adopted as part of preliminary investigations and is subject to appeal. The individuals involved are considered innocent until a final conviction is issued.

This incident highlights the continuous vigilance of Italian authorities in combating illegal trade and protecting national borders from illicit goods. The collaboration between the Guardia di Finanza and the Customs Agency remains crucial in these efforts.

The seizure of such a significant quantity of contraband cigarettes underscores the financial incentives behind such illegal activities and the potential revenue loss for the state. Authorities continue to monitor all entry points to prevent similar occurrences.

Further updates regarding the investigation and any subsequent legal developments will be provided as they become available.
