Regina Viarum Festival: A Journey Through History and Culture Along the Appian Way
From May 21 to 25, 2026, the ‘Regina Viarum’ festival will transform the ancient Appian Way into a vibrant itinerary of experiences, culture, and discovery. This five-day event, starting from Rome and culminating in Minturno, celebrates the Appian Way’s UNESCO recognition by highlighting its most significant stops in the province of Latina.
The festival aims to showcase the contemporary face of this historic road, which for centuries connected peoples, stories, and civilizations. It looks beyond the past, reimagining the ancient route as a symbol of a new way of experiencing the territory: slow, authentic, and shared. The itinerant program will touch upon key locations including Rome, Latina, Terracina, Fondi, Itri, Formia, and Minturno, concluding with a spectacular event at the Roman Theatre of Minturnae.
Key Festival Highlights and Schedule:
Thursday, May 21: Rome – The Festival Kicks Off
The festival begins in Rome with a conference titled “La Regina Viarum: history, landscape, and identity between past and present” at the Appia Antica Regional Park. Esteemed guests include Giuseppe Cederna, Monsignor Pasquale Iacobone, and Park Director Enrico Maria Guarneri. Attendees can also enjoy an immersive visit to the Ex Cartiera Latina, an example of industrial archaeology along the Appian Way. The first stage of the “Passo dopo Passo” walk will also commence from Porta San Sebastiano, guiding participants through some of the most evocative stretches of the Appian Way.
Friday, May 22: Latina – New Perspectives for the Appian Way
On May 22, the festival moves to Latina for the meeting “From history to UNESCO recognition: new perspectives for the Appian Way,” hosted at Sapienza University of Rome. The day will also feature popular music and concerts.

The Archaeological Park of Minturnae will host the Festival of Popular Music and Dances with performances by Valentina Ferraiuolo, Nando Citarella and the Tamburi del Vesuvio, Musici Viatores, and Ninfa Vitale. This free spectacle in the Roman Theatre of Minturnae will celebrate the musical traditions of the Mediterranean and Southern Italy. Additionally, guided tours of Minturno’s historic center and the archaeological area of Minturnae are planned. The “Passo dopo Passo” walk will connect Formia to the Archaeological Park, traversing the coastline and the Ulysses Riviera Park territory.
