Naples, May 10, 2026 – A 31-year-old man has been arrested in the Scampia district of Naples on charges of drug trafficking, following an incident involving a drone suspected of being used to transport narcotics into a prison. The arrest occurred during a routine check by Carabinieri officers.
Drone Intercepted with Significant Drug Haul
During a patrol, Carabinieri from the Scampia station observed 31-year-old Giuseppe Solitro attempting to retrieve a drone that had become entangled on a terrace of the private park “Le Rondini” on Via Bakù. The drone was equipped with an electric pulley system and was found to be carrying a substantial quantity of illicit substances.
The narcotics discovered included 15 blocks of hashish, totaling 778 grams, and 32 grams of cocaine. Additionally, €195 in cash was found with the drone. Authorities believe the aircraft was intended to deliver the drugs to a nearby prison, an increasingly common method used by criminal organizations to bypass traditional security measures.
Arrest and Accomplice Reported
Solitro was attempting to recover the drone with a 41-year-old accomplice when Carabinieri intervened. Officers managed to apprehend Solitro on the spot, preventing their escape. His 41-year-old associate was reported to authorities in connection with the incident.
Further investigation led to the seizure of a Fiat Fiorino, which the two men were using. The vehicle is suspected of having a counterfeit chassis, prompting a more thorough inspection by law enforcement. Solitro has been transferred to prison, awaiting charges of drug trafficking. His accomplice will face charges of complicity in drug trafficking.
Growing Concern Over Drone-Aided Contraband
This incident highlights a growing concern among law enforcement agencies regarding the use of drones for illegal activities, particularly in the context of prison contraband. The sophistication of the drone, equipped with an electric pulley system, suggests a calculated and organized attempt to smuggle drugs. Authorities are continuously working to develop countermeasures against such evolving methods of illicit trade.
The Carabinieri’s swift action in Scampia underscores their commitment to combating drug trafficking and maintaining security, both within and outside correctional facilities. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the operation and identify any other individuals involved.
