Carabinieri Intensify Efforts Against Pickpockets in Rome
Rome, April 26, 2026 – The Carabinieri have launched a significant crackdown on pickpockets operating in Rome’s most frequented tourist areas, leading to a series of arrests over the past day. The operation targeted individuals preying on both tourists and residents in crowded locations across the city center.
High-Profile Arrests in Key Tourist Zones
Among the incidents, a 25-year-old Algerian man was arrested in Largo Gaetana Agnesi after stealing a bag from a Mexican tourist. His accomplice was identified and reported. In Piazza Farnese, a 34-year-old Cuban man was apprehended immediately after snatching a wallet from a French tourist.
Further arrests included two Bulgarian women, aged 17 and 24, who were caught attempting to rob a woman inside the Galleria Alberto Sordi, though their attempt was foiled. In Via Francesco Crispi, a 23-year-old Romanian man was arrested for stealing a wallet from an elderly woman; a minor accompanying him was also identified and reported.
Finally, near the Imperial Forums (Via dei Fori Imperiali), a group of three Romanian citizens (two men and one woman, aged between 20 and 22) were intercepted after skillfully taking a wallet from a Peruvian tourist. All arrests have been validated by the authorities.
Focus on Tourist Safety and Crime Prevention
The Carabinieri’s intensified efforts come as a response to the persistent issue of petty crime in Rome’s bustling areas. These high-traffic locations, including historical sites and shopping districts, are often targeted by pickpockets exploiting the crowds.
The authorities aim to enhance the safety and security of both visitors and locals through increased patrols and rapid response to reported incidents. This proactive approach seeks to deter criminal activity and ensure a more secure environment for everyone enjoying Rome’s attractions.
Community and Tourist Awareness
While law enforcement continues its work, tourists are advised to remain vigilant and take precautions to protect their belongings, especially in crowded areas. Simple measures such as carrying bags securely and being aware of one’s surroundings can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of pickpocketing.
The Carabinieri confirmed their commitment to maintaining public order and safety, with operations against such opportunistic crimes expected to continue across the city’s central districts.
