Assault in Campo de’ Fiori: Restaurateur Hospitalized After Refusing Fake Money

A night of chaos unfolded in Rome’s Campo de’ Fiori district when a 22-year-old Bulgarian man assaulted a restaurateur who discovered he was attempting to pay for alcoholic beverages with counterfeit banknotes. The incident, which took place between Thursday, April 23, and Friday, April 24, resulted in the restaurant owner being hospitalized with a broken jaw and a 20-day prognosis. A police officer was also injured during the subsequent arrest.

Counterfeit Money Sparks Violent Confrontation

The events transpired at a popular restaurant near Via dei Baullari in Campo de’ Fiori. After an evening of drinking with friends, the 2004-born Bulgarian man presented several banknotes to pay for his bill. However, the cashier, using a counterfeit detection machine, immediately identified the money as fake.

According to reports, the 22-year-old reacted violently when his counterfeit payment was refused. The restaurant owner intervened and was subsequently attacked, sustaining significant injuries to his jaw.

Police Intervention and Officer Injury

The commotion, initially mistaken for a brawl, prompted local police to alert emergency services. Officers from the mobile squad quickly arrived at the scene. During the attempt to subdue and arrest the aggressive individual, one of the two intervening officers was also assaulted, sustaining injuries that required hospitalization with a five-day prognosis.

Arrest and Charges

The 22-year-old Bulgarian man was arrested on charges of resisting a public official, assault, and spending counterfeit money.

Wider Implications in Rome’s Nightlife

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding public safety and illicit activities in popular nightlife areas of Rome. Authorities have been actively working to address issues such as brawls and the use of counterfeit currency, as evidenced by recent reports of similar incidents and police operations in other parts of the city.

The quick response of both the restaurant staff and law enforcement prevented further escalation, but the severity of the injuries sustained underscores the potential dangers faced by individuals working in the service industry and by police officers in the line of duty.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the arrested individual awaits legal proceedings.
