Pope’s Address to the EPP: “Being with the People is an Antidote to Populisms and Elitisms”

During an audience with the European People’s Party (EPP), Pope Leo XIV emphasized the importance of public engagement in politics. “The people are not merely passive subjects, recipients of political proposals and decisions. They are, first and foremost, called to be active subjects, co-participants in every political action. Presence among the people and their involvement in the political process is the best antidote to populisms that seek only easy consensus and to elitisms that tend to act without consensus: two prevalent tendencies in today’s political landscape.” He further added, “A ‘popular’ politics requires time, shared projects, and a love for truth.”

Citing Alcide De Gasperi, the Pope highlighted the need to “place the human person at the center” of political endeavor, emphasizing fraternity, justice, and truth as core values.
