A serious apartment fire broke out in the Boccea district of Rome on Wednesday afternoon, April 22, 2026, resulting in an 87-year-old woman being rushed to the Agostino Gemelli polyclinic with severe burns. The blaze, which originated on the third floor of a six-story building, sent a thick column of black smoke into the sky, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.
Elderly Resident Hospitalized with Severe Burns
The 87-year-old woman, whose identity has not been released, was the sole occupant of the apartment at the time of the fire. She was quickly transported to the hospital by 118 emergency personnel, where she is currently receiving treatment for her injuries. While most residents of the building managed to evacuate safely before the arrival of rescuers, two individuals received medical attention at the scene.
Emergency Response and Road Closures
The alarm was raised around 1:30 PM from Largo Boccea, civic number 19. Two fire brigade teams from the Vigili del Fuoco, along with police forces, swiftly arrived to tackle the inferno. To facilitate the emergency operation and ensure public safety, officers from the XIII Aurelio group of the local police of Roma Capitale implemented significant road closures.
Largo Boccea was closed between Via Pier Delle Vigne and Via Monti di Creta, and from Via Pier Delle Vigne to Largo Luigi Monti. These closures caused temporary traffic disruptions in the area, with drivers advised to seek alternative routes.
Witness Accounts and Investigation Underway
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene. “We heard screams and then saw this frightening column of smoke over the building,” a local resident told RomaToday. “Most of the building’s inhabitants had already come down into the street before the rescuers arrived. They were very scared and shaken. We hope there are no serious injuries.”
After the flames were brought under control, the fire department declared the affected apartment uninhabitable. Fortunately, other residents of the building were deemed safe to return to their homes. Agents from the Aurelio police station have taken charge of the investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. At this stage, no further details regarding the origin of the blaze have been released.
