Milan Braces for a Day of Protests: ‘Remigration Summit’ Meets Anti-Racism Marches
Milan, April 18, 2026 – The city of Milan is preparing for a day of significant public demonstrations today, as the Lega party hosts its ‘Remigration Summit’ in Piazza Duomo, drawing both supporters and a strong opposition presence. Three separate counter-demonstrations, organized by various associations, social groups, and Palestinian solidarity movements, are scheduled to converge, raising concerns about potential tensions.
The ‘Remigration Summit,’ organized by the Lega and European Patriots, is set to begin at 3:00 PM in Piazza Duomo. The choice of route for the Lega’s procession, which will follow the traditional path of the Liberation Day parade from Porta Venezia to the Duomo, has sparked considerable controversy and criticism from opposing groups. The Lega procession itself will start at 2:30 PM from Via Palestro.
Counter-Protests Mobilize Across Milan
In response to the Lega’s event, multiple counter-demonstrations have been organized:
- “Milan is Migrant. Racists and Fascists Out of Milan”: This protest, initially planned for Largo Cairoli, will now commence at 2:00 PM from Piazza Lima. It is promoted by a coalition of associations, political parties, and self-organized groups.
- “Antifa. Liberate Milan. Without Fear, Against Fascism, Racism, and Sexism”: Starting at 2:00 PM from Piazza Tricolore, this march is organized by several Milanese social centers, including Lambretta.
- Palestinian Solidarity March: A third demonstration is scheduled for 1:30 PM in Piazza Argentina, featuring the traditional procession of Palestinian solidarity groups.
The three counter-protests are expected to converge in Piazza Santo Stefano, near the State University, to avoid direct confrontation with the Lega’s event at the Duomo. Specific routes for these counter-demonstrations are still being finalized.
Forza Italia Distances Itself from Immigration Initiative
Earlier in the morning, at 10:00 AM, a separate event was organized by Amir Atrous, Forza Italia’s head of immigration in Milan, aimed at giving a voice to second-generation immigrants. However, the party’s leadership has publicly distanced itself from this initiative.
The convergence of these diverse demonstrations underscores the charged political climate in Milan and the broader debate surrounding immigration and national identity in Italy. Authorities are on high alert to ensure public order and safety throughout the day.
The events today follow a period of heightened political discourse, including a recent condemnation of the “Remigration Summit” by Palazzo Marino, which saw a divided center-right in the City Council, with Forza Italia abstaining from the vote. This further highlights the complex political landscape in Milan and across Italy.
