Naples: Innovative Hybrid Prosthesis Saves Patient from Severe Aneurysm

Naples, April 14 – An innovative surgical procedure, the first of its kind in a Central-Southern Italian facility, was successfully performed at Monaldi Hospital in Naples. The operation saved a 58-year-old man suffering from a severe aortic aneurysm and an aortic valve defect. The procedure was carried out by the Cardio-Surgery Operative Unit of Vanvitelli-Monaldi at the Ospedale dei Colli of Naples, led by Professor Marisa De Feo.

Complex Condition Treated in a Single Surgical Session

The operation, performed in recent weeks, allowed for the treatment of an extensive aneurysm in the first section of the aorta, affecting both the ascending segment and the aortic arch, combined with a functional defect of the aortic valve. These are particularly delicate conditions, as they involve an area from which the vessels supplying blood to the brain and upper limbs originate, making the intervention very complex and high-risk.

The ‘Frozen Elephant Trunk’ Technique: A Medical Breakthrough

The intervention involved the replacement of the aortic valve, the ascending aorta, and the entire aortic arch, with reimplantation of the supra-aortic trunks, utilizing the ‘Frozen Elephant Trunk’ technique. This method is currently considered among the most advanced for treating complex pathologies of the thoracic aorta. This approach allows for a more effective treatment of clinical conditions that previously required more invasive procedures associated with higher risks.

New-Generation Prosthesis Offers Personalized Treatment

A particularly significant aspect of this procedure was the use of a new-generation prosthesis. This innovative device further reduces circulation arrest times and simplifies crucial steps of the operation, especially the treatment of the left subclavian artery, a vessel often difficult to reach due to its anatomical position and fragility. An additional advantage of the new prosthesis is the ability to customize the device based on the patient’s anatomical characteristics.

Patient Discharged in Excellent Condition

The surgery was performed without complications, and the patient was discharged after one week in excellent clinical condition.
