Naples, April 14, 2026 – The Cardarelli Hospital in Naples has officially opened two new, highly innovative departments: the Emergency and Urgency Medicine department and a cutting-edge Coronary Intensive Care Unit (UTIC). This significant achievement further strengthens the healthcare hub in Naples, ensuring exceptional patient care for the citizens of the Campania region.

Cardarelli Hospital at the Forefront: Two Innovative Departments

As of today, citizens of the Campania region can benefit from a new Emergency and Urgency Medicine department and a state-of-the-art UTIC department. These facilities are not only advanced in terms of patient management but also in their spatial organization and technological capabilities.

These innovative structures underscore the crucial role of Cardarelli Hospital in managing emergencies and providing care for patients who cannot find adequate responses in other hospitals within the region. From January to March alone, 571 citizens (345 of whom were referred from public hospitals) sought emergency treatment at Cardarelli after initially being treated at other healthcare facilities in Campania.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by several prominent figures, including Loredana Raia, President of the Campania Regional Health Commission, writer Maurizio De Giovanni, who shared his personal experience of care at Cardarelli, and Don Tonino Palmese.

Emergency Medicine Department: A First for Cardarelli

The new Emergency Medicine department represents a significant advancement in emergency-urgency management at Cardarelli. Despite recording over 70,000 emergency room visits annually, the Neapolitan hospital previously lacked a dedicated Emergency Medicine department, an organizational anomaly within the Italian hospital landscape.

The creation of this new department involved the renovation of an area in Pavilion L, which had been under judicial seizure since 2008 due to severe structural inadequacies. The construction project required an investment of approximately 1 million euros. The new facility, directed by Dr. Filomena Liccardi, features sixteen regular beds and one isolation bed. It will serve as a continuum with the Emergency Room-Observation Unit (OBI), treating patients with complex clinical conditions who cannot yet be discharged from the initial emergency structure to ordinary departments.

New Coronary Intensive Care Unit (UTIC) and Hemodynamics Room

Also inaugurated was the new Coronary Intensive Care Unit (UTIC), equipped with 8 beds. These beds are organized into individual capsules, allowing staff to monitor patients from a central console. This new patient reception area ensures maximum safety and privacy, as well as optimal working conditions for the personnel.

Furthermore, within the Cardiology department with UTIC, led by Ciro Mauro, a new hemodynamics room has been set up. This addition complements the two existing rooms already in use within the Emergency Room for managing cardiological emergencies. The third hemodynamics room will increase the capacity for elective interventional cardiology procedures, thereby enhancing the hospital’s overall care capabilities.

Leadership Statements on the New Facilities

“The Cardarelli Hospital is a fundamental node in Campania’s healthcare system. A clear sign of this is evident in the continuous flow of patients who, after seeking care at other facilities, access our emergency services. To continue guaranteeing high-quality services, we also need structures capable of combining care capacity with the dignity of treatment for patients and adequate working environments. The opening of these new departments goes precisely in this direction,” stated General Director Antonio D’Amore.

“With the new Emergency and Urgency Medicine department, we have filled an organizational void that is all the more important, considering that our hospital records 70,000 emergency room visits every year. This department is a continuum with the first emergency activities and, as such, we expect it to provide an even more prompt and adequate response to the healthcare needs of the citizens of the Campania region. I thank all the hospital staff who work every day with professionalism, aware of the value of their role in favor of all Campania citizens; with their commitment, they often bear an essential care burden for the protection of health.”

These new departments underscore Cardarelli Hospital’s commitment to continuous improvement and its vital role in the regional healthcare landscape. The investment in modern infrastructure and technology aims to provide the best possible care for patients facing critical medical conditions.
