Campania Region Corrects Naples Municipality: 3.5 Million Tourist Presences in 2024
Naples, April 14 – The Campania Region has released data indicating that Naples registered approximately 3.5 million tourist presences in 2024. This figure stands in stark contrast to the 13.9 million presences previously reported by the Naples Municipality for the same period. The regional data, published in a managerial decree from Palazzo Santa Lucia on the Official Bulletin of the Campania Region (BURC), aligns with Istat (Italian National Institute of Statistics) figures and is based on actual overnight stays in accommodation facilities.
The decree also includes a classification of coastal municipalities in Campania, categorizing Naples as a locality of ‘ordinary tourist value.’ This classification grants beach concession holders a discount of up to 50% on their fees. In contrast, popular destinations like Sorrento and 23 other coastal towns in Cilento, the Amalfi Coast, and the Gulf islands are designated as areas of ‘high tourist value,’ meaning they do not receive similar discounts on regional taxes for state-owned concessions used for tourism and recreation.
Discrepancy in Calculation Methods
The significant difference in reported tourist numbers between the Municipality and the Region is primarily attributed to their distinct calculation methodologies. The Naples Municipality’s figures are based on mobile phone cell traffic data. Critics argue that this method tends to overestimate presences by counting individuals merely passing through Naples as tourists, rather than those actually staying in the city.
Conversely, the Campania Region’s calculation relies on actual overnight stays recorded in both hotel and non-hotel accommodation facilities. For the reference period, Naples had 42,642 registered beds. This method is generally considered more accurate for assessing genuine tourist presence.
Tourist Flows Across the Region
Despite the lower regional figures, Naples still leads the provincial ranking with approximately 3.5 million presences in 2024. It is followed by Sorrento with just over 3 million, Forio d’Ischia with 970,000, Salerno with nearly 500,000, Maiori with around 400,000, Capri with 397,000, and Giugliano in Campania with 386,000. Torre Annunziata recorded the lowest number of tourist presences, with 4,284.
