Naples, April 13 – A new mural by the renowned street artist Jorit, dedicated to Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, has been unveiled in the Barra district of Naples. The artwork, titled “Tutt’ egual song’ `e criature” (All children are equal), is a tribute to Albanese’s unwavering commitment to human rights, particularly in advocating for Palestinian children.
Jorit’s Homage to a ‘Courageous Woman’
The mural, painted on a residential building in the eastern part of Naples, features a striking portrait of Albanese. Jorit, whose real name is Ciro Cerullo, was still putting the finishing touches on the piece when he spoke about his motivation. “Francesca Albanese is an incredibly courageous woman who stands up for the defense of Palestinian children,” Jorit stated. “For this, she is attacked daily by the most powerful men on Earth, and particularly by the Zionist lobby of politicians and journalists.”
Albanese is widely recognized for her relentless work in human rights, a commitment that has continued despite recent US sanctions targeting her and judges of the International Criminal Court. Her advocacy has made her a prominent figure in the ongoing discourse surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
A Song for the Children: “Tutt’ egual song’ `e criature”
The mural’s title, borrowed from a song by Enzo Avitabile, underscores its central theme: the equality and inherent value of all children. This message resonates deeply with Albanese’s mission to highlight the plight of children in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, particularly in Gaza.
Jorit emphasized Albanese’s role as an impartial representative of the UN. “Francesca works for the UN, a super partes institution that, even if it has lost its centrality today, still has the mission of enforcing international law beyond governments and individual nations,” he explained. “She carries out humanitarian struggles, not political alignments, and strives to remember what is happening in Gaza. A genocide that must be stopped and that has led to the death of over 20,000 Palestinian children.”
Debate and Controversy Surround the Artwork
As soon as images of the mural began circulating on social media, they inevitably ignited a heated debate between supporters and detractors. Some have praised Jorit’s artistic statement and Albanese’s work, while others have criticized the choice of subject or even threatened to deface the artwork.
Jorit, however, embraces the controversy. “I fully claim the choice to have paid homage to this woman,” he added. “And I am always happy when one of my works sparks a debate.” This is not the first time Jorit’s politically charged murals have stirred public discussion, as his work often addresses social and political issues.
The Broader Context: Gaza and International Law
The mural serves as a powerful visual commentary on the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the broader issue of human rights in the region. Albanese’s reports and public statements have consistently drawn attention to the devastating impact of the conflict on the civilian population, particularly children.
The artist’s decision to honor Albanese reflects a growing sentiment among some activists and artists who believe that international bodies and figures like Albanese play a crucial role in upholding international law and advocating for vulnerable populations. The mural’s presence in a public space in Naples ensures that this message reaches a wide audience, prompting further reflection and discussion on these critical global issues.
