Artist Mario Ciaramella Unveils ‘Sacred Bread’ in Naples Church
NAPLES, April 12, 2026, 10:24 AM – Neapolitan artist Mario Ciaramella has unveiled a new site-specific installation titled ‘Sacred Bread’ at the Church of San Giovanni Battista in the San Giovanni a Teduccio district of Naples. The initiative, curated by Carla Travierso, is promoted by the Municipality as part of the ‘Cultura Napoli 2026 – Contemporary Visions’ program, organized by Officine Artistiche Vesuviane.
The exhibition, which will be inaugurated tomorrow, April 13, at 6:00 PM, was specifically created for one of the historic churches of the Neapolitan capital. Organizers emphasize that ‘Sacred Bread’ stems from Ciaramella’s research into the Last Supper, particularly from a series of drawings on the theme, which inspired the sculptures presented.
A Contemporary Last Supper in an Eighteenth-Century Nave
Ciaramella’s installation transforms the eighteenth-century nave of the church into a contemporary Last Supper, featuring his interpretations of the figures of Jesus and the twelve apostles. The exhibition’s path is designed for a ‘slow and immersive experience,’ aiming to revive the ritual of sharing bread.
Adjacent to a medieval column dating back to the year 1000, a ‘drop-seed’ sculpture on a red pedestal immediately introduces visitors to the core theme of the work. This symbolic element underscores the artist’s focus on themes of nutrition, sharing, and the sacred.
Dialogue with the Territory and Community Engagement
The exhibition, which will run until May 14, 2026, will coexist with liturgical activities, intending to serve as a point of aggregation and inspiration for local residents. The organizers state that the objective is to ‘build a direct dialogue with the territory, bringing out the symbolic dimension of bread, nourishment, and the act of sharing. These themes, linked to daily life, are reinterpreted through the contemporary language of the artist.’
In addition to the exhibition, guided tours and meetings will be held. From tomorrow until April 15, Maestro Ciaramella will conduct a linocut workshop, guiding participants through this ancient art printing technique, from design to linoleum engraving, and finally to ink preparation and transfer onto paper. This workshop offers a unique opportunity for community members to engage directly with artistic creation and learn a traditional craft.
