Naples, April 11, 2026 – Hundreds of individuals gathered in Naples on Saturday to express their support for the Freedom Flotilla, a convoy of 20 boats that made a stop in Mergellina. The Flotilla is preparing to set sail again from Naples, with its ultimate destination being Gaza. The demonstration, initially planned to begin in Piazza Vittoria, was relocated at the last minute to Corso Vittorio Emanuele due to public order concerns. This change resulted in a distance of approximately 1.5 kilometers separating the land-based supporters from the maritime fleet.

Last-Minute Route Change for Public Order

An organizer of the event explained the last-minute alteration: “We had to change the announced route just a few hours before.” This modification meant that the demonstrators did not pass in front of the American consulate, which was the only logistical hiccup in an otherwise peaceful march. The demonstration served as a show of solidarity for the upcoming “Spring Mission 2026,” whose primary objective, as in previous missions, remains to “break the illegal blockade” of Gaza.

The Freedom Flotilla: A Global Effort

The Freedom Flotilla involves a total of 100 boats and approximately 3,000 participants from over 50 countries. The fleet is embarking on a challenging journey of 1,560 nautical miles, expected to take more than 15 days of navigation. Its itinerary includes stops in several Italian cities: Livorno, Civitavecchia, Naples, Trieste, Ancona, and Bari, before reaching Sicily and then heading directly towards Gaza.

On Saturday afternoon, the Neapolitan “land fleet” offered its support to the vessels docked in the port. Among the crew members is Tino, who joined the mission from Marseille. “The political project is to bring the Palestinian question back to the center,” Tino stated. “We departed from Marseille on April 4th and stopped after six days of navigation. On Monday, we will return to sea until Calabria, where we will stay for a few days to conduct training activities and prepare people for this mission, which is very particular and also difficult.”

Renewed Urgency for the Mission

Tony La Piccirella, who will embark later from Sicily, was also present at the event. Reflecting on previous missions, La Piccirella noted, “The global scenario has undoubtedly changed compared to the previous journey. Now, however, there are many more reasons to set sail and take to the streets in support of the Palestinian cause.”

The organizers emphasized that the core message of the Flotilla remains consistent: to challenge and ultimately end what they describe as an illegal blockade, thereby bringing international attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The large turnout in Naples underscores the growing public sentiment and the international nature of this ongoing advocacy effort.

The departure of the Flotilla from Naples marks a significant phase in its mission, with participants expressing determination to overcome any obstacles in their path to deliver aid and raise awareness about the situation in Gaza.
