Milan, April 7 – The University of Milan (Statale) is set to host a significant event on Monday, April 13th, with the special screening of the documentary ‘Giulio Regeni – Tutto il male del mondo’ (Giulio Regeni – All the Evil in the World). The film, which delves into the tragic story of the Italian researcher murdered in Egypt a decade ago, will be shown at 9:30 AM in the Aula Magna. This screening is not merely a standalone event but marks the launch of a nationwide initiative to bring the documentary to 76 universities across Italy.
‘Universities for Giulio Regeni’ Initiative Launched
The event, organized by the Statale, is part of the broader initiative ‘Le università per Giulio Regeni’ (Universities for Giulio Regeni). This project, promoted by life senator and University of Milan scientist Elena Cattaneo, commemorates the tenth anniversary of Regeni’s disappearance in Egypt. It aims to involve 76 universities and an estimated 15,000 individuals over two months, featuring a series of meetings and screenings focused on the fundamental value of freedom of research.
Distinguished Guests and Panel Discussion
The institutional greetings will be delivered by Rector Marina Brambilla and Elena Cattaneo, a life senator and Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Milan. Following the documentary screening, a round table discussion will take place, moderated by Lorenza Ghidini, director of Radio Popolare. Panelists will include Stefano Simonetta, Pro-Rector for Student Services and the Right to Study at the Statale; Emanuele Cava, author of ‘Giulio Regeni – Tutto il male del mondo’; Paola Deffendi and Claudio Regeni, Giulio Regeni’s parents; and Alessandra Ballerini, lawyer for the Regeni family. The documentary itself is a production of Fandango and Ganesh Produzioni.
Giulio Regeni’s Legacy: A Movement for Freedom
Elena Cattaneo emphasized the enduring impact of Giulio Regeni’s story: “Giulio Regeni’s story, thanks to the courage and strength of his family, did not end with the discovery of his lifeless body in Cairo ten years ago. On the contrary, Giulio continues to live and to ‘do things’ through a movement of people who recognize themselves in the fundamental value of freedom. The same freedom that Giulio defended as a scholar.”
Giulio’s parents, Paola Deffendi and Claudio Regeni, expressed their gratitude for the initiative: “We are honored and grateful for this initiative involving numerous universities, with professors, students, and PhD students who, we must remember, should always be protected. The documentary reveals both the figure of Giulio as an upright and passionate researcher and the violation of rights that was perpetrated against him.”
A Civil Resistance Rooted in Milan’s University
Rector Marina Brambilla voiced her pride in the university’s role: “As Rector, I am truly proud that this project of civil resistance is starting precisely from the University of Milan Statale, a university that is well aware of its civic responsibility and that dedicates every educational, scientific, and cultural effort to the themes of human rights, legality, and peace. The life that Giulio chose represents at the highest level the freedom of science and knowledge: a principle that defines us as a university and that we have the duty to oversee, defend, and develop.”
