Naples Transforms Waste Management with AI and Smart Cameras

Naples, April 7 – The city of Naples is embarking on a significant technological transformation in its urban waste management. Asìa, the municipal waste collection and disposal company, is introducing an advanced system powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and intelligent cameras to optimize waste collection and improve service quality. The project, with an investment of approximately 7.2 million euros and over half a million euros in public subsidies, has received approval from the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy.

The ‘Waste Digital Twin’ and Real-time Decision Making

At the heart of this initiative is the creation of a ‘Waste Digital Twin’ – a digital replica of the entire waste collection process, continuously fed by artificial intelligence. This innovative approach will enable real-time operational decision-making, significantly enhancing the efficiency and responsiveness of the waste management system.

Smart Cameras on Collection Vehicles for Enhanced Monitoring

A key feature of the project involves installing intelligent cameras with sensors on collection vehicles. These cameras will monitor the quality of waste separation and detect illegally dumped bulky items, effectively transforming each collection truck into a mobile observation unit for the city. Machine learning algorithms will process historical data and contextual conditions to predict service demand and dynamically optimize collection routes. This is expected to reduce mileage and emissions, further improving urban hygiene services across Naples.

Collaboration with Academia and Significant Cost Reductions

The project also benefits from the active involvement of the University Federico II and the University Parthenope, underscoring a commitment to leveraging local academic expertise. It is estimated that the ‘Waste Management Digital Twin’ will reduce non-quality costs in separate waste collection by approximately 20 percent.

Mayor Manfredi’s Vision for a Future-Forward Naples

Mayor Gaetano Manfredi expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Naples is concretely projected towards the future.” He reiterated the city’s goal of achieving a 50 percent separate waste collection rate by the end of this year. “The positive outcome for Asìa’s technological innovation project is certainly one of the positive signs of the work we are carrying out for the city,” added the Mayor.

Asìa’s Industrial Vision and Growing Credibility

Domenico Ruggiero, the sole administrator of Asìa, highlighted the significance of the project’s approval. “The optimal outcome on the presentation of our project represents a concrete recognition of the quality of the work developed by Asìa in recent years. This result is based on an industrial vision, on design capabilities, and on growing institutional credibility,” he stated. Ruggiero further emphasized that Asìa has transitioned from an ordinary operational model to an evolved industrial, sustainable, technological, and predictive management model in just a few years, contributing to strengthening Naples’ position at both national and international levels.

The implementation of AI and smart cameras in waste management marks a pivotal step for Naples, aiming to create a cleaner, more efficient, and technologically advanced urban environment for its residents.
