Milan, April 5 – Maechel Dantone, a 19-year-old resident of Milan, died tragically in a scooter accident in Piazza Prealpi last night. The incident occurred around 2:00 AM at the intersection of Piazza Prealpi and Via Masolino da Panicale. Dantone, known to his friends as ‘Mike’ and in the boxing world as ‘el cubano,’ was riding his Honda ‘Sh’ scooter when he reportedly ran a stop sign and was struck by a Citroen C3.
Devastating Collision in Piazza Prealpi
According to preliminary findings by local police, Dantone was likely traveling at high speed when his scooter was hit laterally by the oncoming car. The impact was severe, sending the Citroen C3, which was traveling from Via Jacopino da Tradate towards Viale Monte Ceneri, into a parked car on the opposite side of the road. The 32-year-old female driver of the car was unharmed and tested negative for alcohol.
Maechel Dantone was thrown approximately twelve meters from his scooter. Emergency responders attempted to resuscitate him for twenty minutes at the scene before transporting him to Niguarda Hospital. Despite their efforts, he could not be saved.
A Life of Boxing and Passion for Motors Cut Short
The news of Dantone’s death spread quickly through messages and social media, prompting an outpouring of grief from friends and neighbors in his community, less than a mile and a half from the accident site. Friends described Maechel as ‘always smiling,’ a ‘brother,’ generous, and helpful, despite facing a ‘difficult life.’
His greatest passion was boxing. He spent countless hours training, earning the affection of his peers and the respect of his opponents. In 2023, he won the Junior regional title in the 60 kg category, fighting for the ‘Boxe Island’ team, which qualified him for the national championships.
Another of his loves was motors: motorcycles, scooters, and car rides with friends. One friend wrote on social media, “I always told you to be careful when you showed me your two-wheelers…”
Tributes and Investigations Underway
Yesterday morning, the corner of Piazza Prealpi and Via Masolino da Panicale was adorned with flowers, photographs, and messages, all dedicated to ‘Mike.’ The scene was a testament to the impact he had on those around him.
Investigations into the exact dynamics of the accident are ongoing. Police are examining all factors that may have contributed to the tragic event.
Another Serious Accident in Milan
Just twelve hours after Dantone’s accident, another serious incident occurred involving a young motorcyclist. A 24-year-old, J.A.W., was critically injured after a collision with a bus at 3:00 PM on Via Riccardo Lombardi in Villaggio Cavour, on the western outskirts of Milan. The motorcyclist reportedly overtook a car and then the bus on the right just as the bus was turning. He was transported to Niguarda Hospital in critical condition.
These incidents highlight the ongoing concerns regarding road safety in Milan, particularly involving young motorcyclists.
