Tragic Accident Claims Life in Tuscolano, Rome

Rome, March 29 – A 33-year-old man, identified as Marco Tramontozzi, tragically lost his life yesterday morning in a collision between his scooter and a car in the Tuscolano district. The accident occurred at the intersection of Via Mestre and Via Monselice, an area residents have repeatedly flagged as hazardous. This incident marks another fatality on Rome’s roads, following closely on the heels of another motorcycle death in Anzio just hours earlier.

Dangerous Intersection Claims Another Victim

The fatal crash took place at a curve described by local residents as dangerous, at the crossroads of Via Mestre and Via Monselice, near Piazza Ragusa. Marco Tramontozzi, riding a Suzuki Burgman scooter, collided with a Toyota Yaris driven by a 30-year-old man. The car driver immediately stopped to render aid.

Despite the swift arrival of emergency services from Ares 118, resuscitation efforts for the 33-year-old motorcyclist were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The impact occurred on a pedestrian crossing, highlighting concerns about road safety in the area.

Rising Toll on Rome’s Roads

This incident adds to a grim statistic for Rome and its surrounding areas. Since the beginning of the year, 24 people have died in road accidents within the urban area of the capital alone. This figure does not include fatalities in the hinterland, coastal areas, or on the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA), nor does it account for those who succumb to their injuries in hospitals after being admitted following an accident. The unofficial total for the wider region is nearing forty victims, underscoring a continuous and alarming trend of road fatalities.

Investigation Underway

Agents from the I Gruppo Prati, along with other police units, are investigating the dynamics of yesterday’s accident. The driver of the Toyota Yaris was taken to the hospital for alcohol and drug tests, a standard procedure. He may face charges of vehicular homicide, a formal step pending the results of laboratory tests.

Police have impounded both vehicles involved in the collision and are considering acquiring footage from security cameras in the area. These recordings could provide crucial insights into the moments leading up to the crash between the car and the scooter.

Community Concerns and Previous Incidents

The community’s concerns about the intersection of Via Mestre and Via Monselice are not new. Residents have long advocated for measures to improve safety at this particular spot, citing its dangerous curve and the high risk it poses to drivers and pedestrians alike.

Just hours before Tramontozzi’s death, Ivar Sartori, 25, died in Anzio after his KTM motorcycle crashed into parked cars on Riviera Mallozzi. While investigations into that incident are ongoing to determine its exact dynamics, the proximity of these two fatal motorcycle accidents underscores a broader issue of road safety in the Lazio region.

The continuous string of road fatalities has prompted renewed calls for greater attention to infrastructure, traffic management, and driver awareness campaigns across Rome and its provinces. Local authorities are under increasing pressure to address these persistent dangers and implement effective preventative measures to protect commuters and residents.
