EIB Invests €200 Million to Boost Milan’s Electricity Network

Milan, March 25, 2026 – The European Investment Bank (EIB) has granted A2A a total of €200 million to significantly develop and modernize the electricity distribution networks across Lombardy, with a particular emphasis on the province of Milan. This substantial investment aligns with national and European decarbonization targets, aiming to prepare and strengthen the electrical grid for an anticipated increase in energy consumption in the Milanese area.

Project Details: Extensive Upgrades and New Technologies

The project outlines a comprehensive plan for infrastructure renewal and enhancement. Key interventions include:

  • Network Renewal: Approximately 450 km of medium-voltage lines and about 140 km of low-voltage lines will be renewed using new-generation cables.
  • Network Rationalization: Activities will focus on optimizing the existing grid structure.
  • Undergrounding Infrastructure: Certain sections of the electrical infrastructure will be moved underground in urban areas highly susceptible to extreme weather events.
  • Substation Modernization: Nearly 800 secondary cabins will be rebuilt and modernized.
  • Energy Efficiency: New transformers will be installed to reduce electricity dispersion, alongside other advanced equipment.

The collective goal of these interventions is to increase the available transformation capacity, improve the distribution of electrical loads, and facilitate quicker maintenance operations, thereby ensuring a more reliable and resilient power supply for Milan.

Environmental Impact: Significant CO₂ Reduction

Beyond operational improvements, the agreement between the EIB and A2A is set to deliver substantial environmental benefits. It is estimated that these upgrades will lead to an annual reduction of approximately 6.9 kilotons of CO₂ emissions. This reduction is equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed annually by around 50,000 trees, marking a significant step towards the region’s decarbonization goals.

Preparing for Increased Energy Demand

The investment comes at a crucial time as Milan anticipates a rise in energy consumption. By modernizing and strengthening the electrical network, the project aims to proactively address future demands, ensuring that the city’s infrastructure can support its growth and sustainability objectives. The upgrades will enhance the grid’s ability to integrate renewable energy sources and manage fluctuating loads more effectively.

A2A’s Commitment to Sustainable Development

A2A, a prominent multi-utility company, continues its commitment to sustainable development and the provision of essential services. This partnership with the EIB underscores its dedication to improving infrastructure and contributing to a greener future for Lombardy and its capital, Milan. The project is expected to bolster the region’s energy security and contribute to a more efficient and environmentally friendly power distribution system.
