Naples, March 23 – One month after a devastating fire severely damaged the historic Sannazaro Theatre, an announcement has been made regarding its future. The Ministry of Culture is set to acquire the theatre, as confirmed by Salvatore Vanorio, co-manager of the venue, during a press conference held this morning at Gambrinus in Naples.

Ministry of Culture to Invest in Sannazaro Theatre

Vanorio, who manages the theatre with his wife Lara Sansone, reiterated the Ministry’s commitment, stating, “The Sannazaro no longer holds keys; from today, we can say it belongs to all of us and not to private owners.” He quoted Minister Alessandro Giuli, who previously announced the acquisition, emphasizing, “His is an investment, and I believe that in fifty years, the theatre will be worth three times as much.”

The fire, which occurred on February 17, left the theatre in ruins, prompting urgent discussions about its reconstruction and the continuation of its artistic activities. Vanorio stressed the immediate need for a temporary home for the Sannazaro company while reconstruction efforts are underway. “We need a space where we can welcome our audience and stage our shows for long periods; we must protect our artists and workers,” he added.

Search for a Temporary Venue Underway

Several options for a temporary venue have been explored. Vanorio confirmed that offers from the Mediterraneo Theatre (from the Municipality of Naples) and a proposal for an itinerant season with weekly availability at the Mercadante Theatre were declined. However, the option of the Teatrino di Corte of the Royal Palace remains viable, with Minister Giuli actively working to secure it.

Committee for the Sannazaro Theatre Established

The press conference also served as the official launch of the Committee for the Sannazaro, chaired by Lara Sansone, with writer Maurizio de Giovanni serving as honorary president. Sansone expressed gratitude for the institutional support received. “We are grateful to all the institutional representatives for what they are doing,” Sansone stated. “For our part, we hope to find a home as soon as possible where we can guarantee work for everyone who makes up the large Sannazaro family. We have nothing left, but we must have strength and determination, and we do not lack that.”

The establishment of the committee underscores the commitment to preserving the Sannazaro’s legacy and ensuring the continuity of its cultural contributions to Naples. The theatre has been a significant cultural institution in the city, and its loss has been deeply felt by the community.

Impact on the Local Cultural Scene

The fire at the Sannazaro Theatre has had a considerable impact on Naples’ vibrant cultural scene. The theatre’s closure has displaced numerous artists and staff, highlighting the fragility of cultural institutions in the face of unforeseen disasters. The efforts to rebuild and relocate the company temporarily are crucial for maintaining the city’s artistic momentum and supporting its creative workforce.

The Ministry of Culture’s decision to acquire the theatre is seen as a significant step towards its long-term preservation and revitalization. This investment is expected to ensure that the Sannazaro will continue to serve as a cultural landmark for generations to come, contributing to the rich artistic heritage of Naples and Italy.

Further updates on the temporary venue and the reconstruction timeline are expected as the Committee for the Sannazaro progresses in its efforts.
