Salvatore Lauro, Maritime Entrepreneur and Former Senator, Dies at 75
Naples, March 22 – Salvatore Lauro, a leading figure in Italian maritime entrepreneurship and a former senator, passed away this morning at the age of 75. Born in Ischia, Lauro inherited the family business, Alilauro, from his father Agostino, and transformed it into one of the most significant holdings for fast sea transport in the Gulf of Naples and along major Italian maritime routes.
A Legacy of Maritime Innovation
Lauro took the helm of the family group in 1989. Under his leadership, the company pioneered the use of hydrofoils for connections to the islands of the Gulf of Naples, including Ischia and Capri, and the Sorrento Peninsula. He expanded Alilauro’s services across the Tyrrhenian Sea, solidifying its brand as a key private operator in the sector. His vision helped to modernize and streamline sea travel, making it more accessible and efficient for both residents and tourists.
His entrepreneurial journey was not limited to the maritime sector. In 2024, Lauro published his autobiography, “Il mare dentro” (The Sea Within), recounting his extensive business experience. Just last year, he received a prestigious award from Federitaly as an “Ambassador of Italian excellence in the world” for his invaluable contributions to the development of the national maritime industry.
Political Engagement and Public Service
Beyond his business endeavors, Salvatore Lauro also dedicated himself to public service. In 1996, he was elected to the Senate with Forza Italia, serving as a representative for his region. His political career was marked by a commitment to the growth and development of Campania, advocating for policies that supported enterprise, employment, and the local economy.
Tributes Pour In from Political and Business Leaders
The news of Lauro’s passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from across Italy. Massimiliano Manfredi, President of the Regional Council of Campania, expressed the assembly’s profound sorrow. “As a politician and a shipowner, Senator Salvatore Lauro expressed with commitment his bond with Campania and a political vision attentive to the world of business, work, and the economy, aimed at the development and growth of the territory,” Manfredi stated, offering his personal condolences and those of the Regional Council to Lauro’s family.
Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi also took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his condolences: “Salvatore Lauro was able to lead a historic company in our territory with great skill, becoming a point of reference in the naval sector. On behalf of the Administration, I express my heartfelt condolences to his children and the entire family.”
Severino Nappi, Deputy Coordinator of Lega Campania and a member of the Lega Federal Council, expressed “sincere sorrow for the sudden passing of my friend Salvatore Lauro, a dynamic, attentive, and far-sighted entrepreneur, but also an authoritative, serious, and correct man of institutions. Salvatore never failed to offer attention, advice, and proposals for our land, always suggested with style, grace, and balance, but also with the grit of someone with solid roots and strong values. With the gentle and available man, we lose a pillar of the country’s nautical entrepreneurship, and I will always remember his love for our Ischia. Salvatore leaves a void difficult to fill. A warm embrace to his beautiful family.”
Salvatore Lauro’s passing marks the end of an era for the Italian maritime industry and the region of Campania. His vision, leadership, and dedication to both business and public service have left an indelible mark on the country.
