NATO Mission in Iraq (NMI) Successfully Relocates to Naples, Italy
BRUSSELS, March 20, 2026 – The NATO Mission in Iraq (NMI) has successfully adjusted its operational posture, safely transferring all its personnel from the Middle East to Europe. This strategic move sees the mission’s activities now continuing from the Joint Force Command in Naples, Italy.
General Alexus Grynkewich, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, expressed gratitude to both the Republic of Iraq and all contributing Allies for their support in the safe transfer of personnel. “I wish to thank the Republic of Iraq and all Allies who contributed to the safe transfer of personnel,” stated General Grynkewich, highlighting the collaborative effort behind this significant relocation.
Continuity of Mission from Naples
The NMI, a non-combat advisory and capacity-building mission, is dedicated to assisting Iraq in developing more sustainable, transparent, inclusive, and effective security institutions and forces. Its primary objective is to enable Iraq to stabilize its own country, combat terrorism, and prevent the resurgence of ISIS/Daesh.
