Naples, March 18 – Two young men were shot and injured in Via Mianella, Secondigliano, late on Wednesday night. The victims, both in their 20s, were inside a car when the attack occurred. They were immediately transported to CTO hospital, where their condition is reported as not life-threatening.
Secondigliano Shooting Follows Major Anti-Drug Operation
The incident has once again brought Secondigliano into the spotlight, coming just hours after a significant police operation that targeted a criminal group active in drug trafficking between Via Monte Faito and the Berlingieri district. Police are currently investigating the shooting to determine its dynamics and motive.
Details of the Anti-Drug Blitz
The ambush in Via Mianella closely followed an operation that led to the arrest of eleven individuals. These individuals are believed to be involved in drug trafficking, dealing, and extortion, all aggravated by mafia methods. The arrests were carried out by the police under the delegation of the Naples Public Prosecutor’s Office, at the request of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate.
Investigations conducted by the Secondigliano police station and the mobile squad revealed the activities of a group that allegedly managed the retail sale of cocaine in the Berlingieri district and surrounding areas. This was facilitated through a fixed drug dealing point and ‘on-demand’ deliveries.
The investigation also uncovered links to the Vanella Grassi and Licciardi clans, from whom the group was reportedly forced to source their drug supplies. This drug dealing hub, known as ‘Piazza di 111’ and active for approximately thirty years, reportedly generated revenues of around 280,000 euros annually. Drugs were also reportedly hidden in public gardens along Via Monte Faito.
The investigation, spanning from March 2022 to May 2023, aimed to dismantle a deeply entrenched criminal system within the neighborhood.
Uncertainty Surrounds Connection to Organized Crime
It remains unclear whether the shooting of the two young men in Via Mianella is an act of organized crime, and if it is, whether it is connected to the new criminal dynamics emerging after the recent police crackdown.
Previous Incidents and Ongoing Investigations
Local authorities have been working to combat organized crime in the Secondigliano area. This latest incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining peace and order in the region. The police are actively gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses to shed light on the shooting. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
The community remains concerned about the resurgence of violence, and residents hope for swift action to ensure their safety. The authorities have reiterated their commitment to addressing criminal activities and restoring a sense of security in the affected areas.
