Metromare Expansion: Torrino-Mezzocammino and Giardino di Roma Stations Set for 2027 Completion
Rome, March 16 – The new Metromare stations of Torrino-Mezzocammino and Giardino di Roma are steadily taking shape, with assurances from the Capitoline that the project remains on schedule for completion by the first quarter of 2027. This will be followed by the technical time required for operational launch.
The update came during a joint Mobility-Jubilee commission, convened by presidents Giovanni Zannola and Dario Nanni, directly at the Torrino-Mezzocammino construction site in Municipio IX. The commission also reviewed progress at the Giardino di Roma station, bordering Municipio X. Technicians from Astral and municipal administration representatives were present.
Construction Progress and Challenges
Work commenced between September and October 2025, and some hurdles have been encountered. The main delay at Mezzocammino was due to the relocation of high-voltage cables, a delicate phase that has now been overcome. In recent months, the systems powering the railway line have been secured, alongside site remediation and excavation operations, following geological, archaeological, and unexploded ordnance checks. The most significant challenge, however, concerns the planned parking facility next to the Torrino-Mezzocammino station.
This facility, designed for approximately 200 cars, is considered crucial for intermodality in an area that has experienced significant residential growth in recent decades. The project is ready, and the area has been cleared of Superintendent’s restrictions. However, an additional economic integration is required from the office of the Extraordinary Commissioner for the Jubilee, a role held by Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, to proceed with the tender. “We are ready to start the tender,” stated Zannola. The situation is different at Giardino di Roma, where a parking lot already exists and requires no further funding. Timelines for this station also remain aligned with the other.
Jubilee Funds Prove Decisive
The inclusion of the two stations among the projects funded by Jubilee funds has proven decisive. This choice has allowed for streamlined procedures that, without this channel, would likely have extended the waiting period by years. Bureaucracy, restrictions, and administrative steps have therefore not altered the deadline set for March 2027.
Commitment to Accessibility and Connectivity
Beyond tracks and platforms, the project places particular emphasis on accessibility, featuring a pedestrian walkway and elevators for people with reduced mobility at Torrino-Mezzocammino. It also includes an enhancement of surface public transport to effectively connect surrounding neighborhoods. As reiterated during the inspection, these stations are not merely construction sites; they represent a response to areas that have long demanded connections commensurate with their growth. The current challenge is to meet every commitment without further deviations.
Furthermore, there is an urgent need to accelerate the strengthening of the line by increasing the number of circulating trains. Just days ago, news broke of FS’s acquisition of Firema. It is worth noting that the Campania-based company, responsible for manufacturing new trains (38 in total, including those for the Rome-Viterbo line) for the line reaching Ostia, had been experiencing production stagnation, causing years of delay in vehicle delivery (the first delivery was expected in early 2024). Now, efforts must be made to ensure that the new stations, operational from 2027, do not lead to the paradox of increased waiting times at platforms due to a scarcity of operational rolling stock.
