Naples, March 10 – A magnitude 5.9 earthquake was recorded by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in the early hours of Tuesday, March 10, off the coast of the Gulf of Naples, in Campania. The seismic event occurred shortly after midnight, at 00:03 local time.

Deep Epicenter Likely Caused Imperceptible Tremor

The epicenter of the earthquake was located off the Gulf of Naples, approximately 10 kilometers from the island of Capri. According to available estimates, the tremor originated at a considerable depth of about 414 kilometers. This significant depth is believed to be the reason why the earthquake was largely imperceptible to residents in the affected areas.

Among the inhabited centers that might have felt the seismic phenomenon are Anacapri, located about 8 kilometers from the epicenter, and Capri, approximately 10 kilometers away. Despite the magnitude, no damage to people or property has been reported at this time.

No Damage or Injuries Reported

Local authorities and emergency services have confirmed that there have been no reports of injuries or structural damage following the earthquake. The deep nature of the seismic activity typically dissipates much of the energy before it reaches the surface, thus reducing the potential for destructive effects.

Understanding Earthquake Depth and Perception

Earthquakes are caused by sudden movements in the Earth’s crust. Their impact on the surface depends not only on their magnitude but also on their depth. Shallow earthquakes (those occurring at depths of less than 70 km) tend to cause more significant shaking and potential damage on the surface, even if they are of moderate magnitude. In contrast, deep earthquakes, like the one recorded off Naples, often have their energy attenuated over a greater distance, leading to weaker or unnoticeable shaking at the surface, even with higher magnitudes.

Safety Measures in Case of an Earthquake

While this particular earthquake did not cause immediate concern, the Italian Civil Protection agency regularly issues guidelines on how to act in the event of a seismic event. These recommendations include having a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher at home, familiarizing oneself with municipal emergency plans, and avoiding the use of stairs and elevators during a tremor. These measures are crucial for personal safety and to avoid hindering rescue operations.

Previous Seismic Activity in the Region

The Gulf of Naples region, known for its volcanic and seismic activity, is regularly monitored by INGV. While minor tremors are not uncommon, a magnitude 5.9 event, even at great depth, is noteworthy. The area is home to Mount Vesuvius and the Phlegraean Fields, both active volcanic systems, contributing to the geological complexity of the region.

Scientists will continue to analyze the data from this earthquake to gain further insights into the tectonic processes occurring deep beneath the Tyrrhenian Sea.
