ROME, March 10 – An incident involving incendiary bottles being thrown into Garbatella Park on the evening of March 8th has sparked concern within the local community and led to strong criticism from the environmental association Legambiente Garbatella.

Incendiary Bottles in Garbatella Park: A Close Call

The event, which occurred in the green area of Via Rosa Raimondi Garibaldi, fortunately resulted in only minor burn marks on the grass. However, the potential for a larger fire in the park was significant. Eyewitnesses filmed the scene on their phones, and these videos were subsequently circulated on social media by the ‘Welcome to Favelas’ page.

Legambiente’s Alarm and Criticism

Legambiente Garbatella, which manages the park along with the urban gardens, was quick to highlight the incident. The association expressed dismay that despite the event being documented and shared online, no one present thought to contact law enforcement. Legambiente noted that the park has been subjected to various acts of vandalism in recent weeks, yet even with people in the vicinity, authorities were reportedly not informed as the incidents unfolded.

“Is it possible that, besides posting the video on social media, no one thinks of calling law enforcement?” read a statement released by the association. Legambiente emphasized that concepts such as common good, solidarity, shared spaces, and a welcoming community risk becoming empty words if park visitors do not actively protect it during such occurrences.

From a Community Gathering to Vandalism

The timing of the incident adds another layer of concern, as it took place just hours after a well-attended event in the park. On the same day, a plaque dedicated to Father Guido Chiaravalli was unveiled, drawing a large number of residents to commemorate a figure who dedicated years to the youth of the neighborhood. “Just a few hours later, however, no one was concerned that incendiary bottles were being thrown,” observed Legambiente, stating that they only learned of the event through social media.
